Comment:

I have a new Win98 laptop that I'm trying to use to connect to my NT Server (I'm a relative novice BTW).

The laptop has the following configurations:
Identification: laptop2, MYDOMAIN
Access Control: User-level
Client for MSNetworks: Log into NT domain - MYDOMAIN
TCP/IP - obtain IP automatically
- Disable WINS
- Gateway - correct address
- Enable DNS
Host = laptop2
Domain = MYDOMAIN
DNS Search order - correct address

When I log into NT w/these settings, I don't find the domain. When I add NetBeui as a protocol, I can log in with no problem. At this point, however, I can't ping anything on my network. If I run winipcfg I see an IP address. Additionally, I can't get to my other domain. Other computers on MYDOMAIN can ping the laptop2.

If I use the user's login from a different laptop (95 laptop with same settings but no Netbeui) I can log in with no problem and can ping anything.

Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated!

Ok.. try the following steps just
1. Shutdown the laptop
2. leave it on TCP\IP protocol
3. go to MSDOS prompt
4. on C:\ type winipcfg
5. a screen should appear
6. the IP Address section sould have a number
7. If doesn't, click on "renew"
8. If you get an error the problem is with LAN cable.

That should restore your connection. Reboot

How irritating. Once I removed the dial-up adapter settings everything worked fine.

Thank you so much for your help.
