Comment:
Hi i have 2 computers connected with a cross over cable both running NT 4.0. Both of the computers can see themselves in network neighbourhood but not each other. They are using TCP/IP set up on the same subnet mask (255.255.0.0) , one is 198.168.0.1 with a default gateway of 198.168.0.2 the other is 198.168.0.2 with a default gateway of 198.168.0.1 Both machines can ping each other but can't see each other. Any idea why ? Thanks

You need a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0, and ensure "use NetBios over TCP/IP" is checked.

I have changed the subnet mask to 255.255.255.0, but i can't find a checkbox that says use netbios over tcp/ip anywhere. Where is it ?

Your original subnet mask was just fine. Just as long as it is the same in both pcs. Netbios over tcp/ip checkbox is greyed out if I recall since it is a default.
You can ping both ways. Great. Now are both machines in the same workgroup? Are you logging into each with the same account name and password? Is something shared on each nt box [nothing shared means nothing to broadcast]?
Any errors in event viewer?
