One thing I noticed is because I use Call Wave, you have to set the zone alarm to MEDIUM, PER ZONE ALARM AND CALL WAVE, do you think this gives me protection. Sue

Its both Local and Internet that has to be set at medium, you cannot just allow callwave to have access, that is one thing I do not like about it, I did install it again and set it up then just rememberd why I did not think it did me that much good, but will leave it and see. Sue

No, it doesnt give u enough protection.
ZA's default configuration for medium level of security is ONLY: 'Block Incoming NetBIOS (port 135, 137-139, 445)'. To make sure test it at www.GRC.com---Choose ShieldUP

Sue, you can always disable ZA. If you do it that way (only while using CW), you can leave the settings at the high level the rest of the time. HTH.

Sue,

Hi - I just tested Zone Alarm as suggested by Sanjaya above. On medium security settings the only port open was 135,Remote Procedure. On high security, that same port was still open. I used the ShieldUp scan and the port scan. So Zone Alarm works well in medium or high security mode except for that one port.

The GRC.com site says to protect that port, you need a personal firewall. If Zone Alarm doesn't protect it, does anyone know what firewall does? Also, what is that port used for and what is the risk of having it open?

Sue, to answer your question in previous post, it seems prudent to me to run Zone Alarm with dial up. I get notices several times a day that a port scan was attempted. So that tells me that it is useful!

Thanks.

SYGATE 4.2, You might have to do a minor tweak or two. But it's worth it because it passes spinrite test's (grc.com) with flying colours!!
And, like Z/A, it's ffffffreeeeeee.

OK I tested and all the Ports say closed and port 139 says steath, the rest including 135 say closed. so I guess it is protecting me, although have not recieved a call yet but looks like it is working ok. Suzi as I stated my 135 says closed, so I don't know why yours says open, I did also test all ports at high and they all said steath, but at medium as I said they all said closed except 139 says steath. Sue Thanks everybody, I did email zone alarm just to double check all this stuff. will post back when I hear from them. Sue

Sue,

I tested Call Wave while I had theZone Alarm set to high security, (called my home phone with my cell phone) and got a busy signal. I have call waiting from phone co. but it is disabled when I use my dial up connection.
With Zone Alarm set on medium security, the phone calls come through without problem

Viking, where would I find SYGATE 4.2, and would it protect that port, 135? and would it work with CallWave? Thanks.

Suzi, yes, it does protect port 135. As for callwave i'm unsure....suck it & see, as they say. copy & paste for sygate:

http://www.sygate.com/free/spf_download.htm

If you get problems setting it up, which you shouldnt. Get back to me. like i said it may take a little tweaking & experimenting. I swapped over from Z/A quite a few months ago because of a number of Z/A issues & i certainly wouldn't go back!! Sygate is just as user freindly as Z/A but more configurable.

And, before anybody mentions the mildly damning reports @ grc.com of the sygate wall, that was the early version which sygate corrected & replaced with 4.2. Which, thanks to grc would never have happened. So a big hat's off to spinrite 5 for such a useful & influential website....I for one love it.

Hi ya all,
First of all, why I said at medium level you dont get ENOUGH protection? Because at stated above (Sueīs response at no 6) that only NetBIOS port stealthed and the other is closed. It means a hacker can see the port and know that you are online but the port is closed..the task now is simpler: how to open a closed port? But if your ports are stealth that means nobody can see you. You seemed to be offline but the fact is u r online. So a Hacker canīt target you.
About port 135...yes under Win 95/98/Me port 135 wil be stealthed by any good firewall, BUT under Win2000 and Win XP Pro, the port 135, as explained in GRC.com, is imposible to closed. You need a smart firewall to make it apperas īstealthī. The only firewall that can do this as long as I know is ZobeAlarm. I have tested with Sygate 4.2, Norton Internet Security, Winroute, Tiny PFW and only ZA can do this job really nicely.
One thing....ZA is not only smart very powerful firewall but also dumb-proof. You donīt need to have headdache with it in order to get good result in Shield Up. I have tweak from A-Z Sygate, NIS and the other but it is still port that opened or closed.

Your holding your mouth wrong!!....LOL

Sygate > different o/s's = flawless result's!

I guess, it's down to personal preference at the end of the day. & what you can make work for you.

Both Sygate & Z/A are cracking because:
There FFFFFFREEEEEEE !

No..Iīm not wrong.
I have tested it on Win2000 Pro and Win Xp Pro. Myself at GRC.com and I have tested it myself on my friendīs computer using port probers (NetScanTools) and the result is port 135 is opened.
