I currently do not have a personal firewall running on my system.Closest I could get would be my NAV2001.I have heard about the importance of having a personal firewall, but seeing people with problems regarding ZoneAlarm,I am reluctant to use it.You know the,"if it ain't broke, don't fix it" outlook.Or is this a "better fix it b4 it breaks" scenario?
I would appreciate some feedback on this...
Thanx in advanceFYI- Compaq7110,1.4 Athlon,60GbHD,256Ram

The Kid,
You do need a personal firewall. You already know of the three free favourites on this forum ? :)
Sygate 4.2, Tiny pf, Zonealarm.I used Z/A for ages without any problems and it worked great but for some inexplicable reason I started getting irreversible Internet lockups and my then isp told me to take it off, which I did.
I moved over to Sygate straight away and haven't had a problem since installing it.
Everybody has there preferred firewall the above are the freebies most people use.Viking

For 3rd party opnion:
http://www.pcflank.com/art19.htm
OR
http://grc.com/lt/scoreboard.htmI myself use and prefer ZA than anyother firewall. I have used it since its in early stage 2 years ago and have never had any problem with it.
ZA 3.0 Final will come out soon with many more features such as ad bolockers, script manager, etc.
For more infos about ZA 3.0 (now it is still in BETA---still under construction---still in testing lab) go a look at: http://www.zonelabs.com/products/zap/zapro3beta_download.html

What is 'it'? TPF, ZA or Sygate you refer to?
If ZA, I recommend you to install and use the latest release version, ZA 2.6.362, just go to www.zonelabs.com and scroll down the page and you get the free version. The above link, i meantion is only for infos that if u r interested trying new or BETA software, you can try it and as image, which features ZA 3.0 would have. Otherwise, it is safer if you install the 2.6.362 release version and wait for the 3.0 release version.
If you dont use any ZA before, just install it and need some clicks and you go.
For more infos go to: http://www.zonelabs.com/services/support_install.htm

hello
you will have to let some of your programs act as servers with zone alarm or it wont let them on the internet.
you can allso catch all spy ware programs trying to get on the net if you know what they are. some try to imatate bill gates own up date programs.
if you you spy-mesh(i-mesh) youll have your rundl dll trying to be a searver pull a few more.just things to watch for.
set loacal zone on medium, and internet on high this should work. read its help pages over youll have no problems.im useing the pro verion my self.went to that place that was listed in one of the posts where you get your ports scaned and contion traced.
test resaults were 100% secure i allso did the plug and pray patch i found out about in here.and have just started useing evidence elimanater .at notrons sight i did security check there and passed just fine.im useing an older zap but its working grate.
i did post a complete clean removeal of zap in anther fire wall posting if any one wants to do clean remove let me know i can repost it got it on cd
have a nice day

If you have Sygate, you may as well not even bother.
Zone Alarm is bloatware, has very little user control, and lets through a lot of stuff you do not know about, and it does not tell you about.
Kerio Personal Firewall (formerly Tiny) is the best, but it take a little learning or knowledge about rule sets. Don't be daunted. Join the Kerio mailing list. Lots of support there, from the developers, even.

I've Always had fully stealthed results with Sygate (can take some configuring sometimes). So, Big L ...Just because you may have had bad results doesn't mean everyone has !
The best advice you can offer is to try them all and see which one works for you.
Common sense really.

Start with Zone Alarm, because its free and great, I bought Nortons Internet Security & virus protection, when I was running w98 and had nothing but trouble, used it for 7 months, caught a virus, had to reinstall per Nortons, not once but twice, so I then went to Zone Alarm and Inoculate it, now AVG Virus protection, my point is try the free, if you don't like it at least you did not have to pay for it, plus Nortons really slows machine down. Sue

zone alarm is the number 1 for me its easy to use and after youve said which programmes you want to let through you hardly know its there.....zone alarm

Important Advisory: Deleting registry entries incorrectly may cause serious problems to your operating system (OS) which may necessitate the need to reinstall the OS. Please make sure you are able to perform these deletions correctly before you decide to edit the entries.
For information about how to edit the registry in Windows Me, type "regedit.exe" from a command prompt. Click "Help," then "Help Topic." Click "Changing Keys and Values."
Note that you should back up the registry before you edit it.
The following key contains information needed by the uninstaller:
Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Zone Labs and all its subkeys and values.
Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\ZoneAlarm Pro
If your system is running Windows Me these registry items starts the services required for ZoneAlarm Pro:
Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunService
Value: MiniLog and Value: TrueVector
Under Windows Me, these values are added to the Shared DLLs database:
This is a database that contains a long list of values, but only these values are related to ZoneAlarm Pro and TrueVector:
Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\SharedDLLs
Values:
C:\Windows\System\vsdata.dll

C:\Windows\System\Zone Labs\vsruledb.dll
For each user who has run ZoneAlarm Pro, there are registry keys in
Key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Zone Labs
The following keys allow the user to modify the sound that is played when there is an alert through use of the Control Panel Sounds applet:
Key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\AppEvents\EventLabels\InternetAlert
Key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\AppEvents\Schemes\Apps\.Default\InternetAlert\.current
On Windows Me systems, the following keys tell Windows the ZoneAlarm Pro Desk Band is a part of ZoneAlarm Pro:
Key: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{long string of characters}\InprocServer32
Value: C:\Program Files\Zone Labs\ZoneAlarm\zoneband.dll
The string of characters will vary from system to system.
There is a registry key for the extension of every attachment that ZoneAlarm Pro quarantines (.vbs, for example). This can be found in:
Key: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
Value: ZAMailSafeExt: REG_SZ: {renamed extension -- zl9, for example)

Hello The Kid,
I've using the ZA firewall for 3 years they very best choices by PCMag and CNet editor's picks. My Norton AV 4.0 (Still use old version and still alive!) working great for Emails, but I don't use the OE/NCMSGR. Alway use webbased Email with a network antivirus system in the webbased servers as Hotmail, Yahoo! and some of server including a network antivirus servers..
You should try ZA firewall at www.zonealarm.com and look around on the website if you like ZA program.
ZA firewall r0ck5!!!!

Speaking from my own experince, ZoneAlarm was a nightmare! you already have norton anti virus why not try norton security? I've got both of them running on my system works great, not near as annoying as ZoneAlarm.

I tried Norton Personal Firewall when I was running ICS on my main machine & it sucked, there was not enough customization ability. I went to ZA Pro and it rocks. It was worth every penny I paid for it. You can customize its configuration just about any way you want. When I de-networked and took off ICS, I set everything to High and ran the test on symantec.com and came out as stealthy as can be. One tremendous feature in the latest version is the ability to configure which programs can access the net or act as servers. You can give them permanent rights or have ZA ask permission each time. I was amazed at how many Bull---t programs try to access the net without you knowing it (Microsoft is the winner here). My advice: get ZA Pro. You will not regret it.
