My neighbor who is a programmer ,gave me a really cool brand new keyboard with backlite keys,a small LCD screen thats shows staus on PC ,game information while playing games etc. When he gave this to me he said the reason was to try and get me to upgrade to WinXP ,since this keyboard features will only work with WinXP. I've been asking him for help qwith my over the top reinstall on WinMe ,that has my system pretty messed up as far as ceratain files and folders in wrong place ,a bloated registry with almost everything listed twice. Basically however what I use my PC for mostly ,surfing the net ,writing documents and I finally have my TV Wonder USB Edition working again ! My ? is would installing the WinXP upgrade over a somewhat corrupt install of WinMe cause the XP O/S to also have problems ? Or would installing the upgrade ,correct the registry and other mis problems with previous O/S ?
Thanks You Nick

There's only one way to approach a problem like this without spending a lot of time and money, and even then.....

Use your XP CD to perform a CLEAN install on an EMPTY hard drive. During the process, the installer will "ask" for proof of ME. Simply stick/jam/shove your ME cd in "there", the installer will girate, wash, dry, and pronounce, "well, alrighty then"

Trying to get Nick to reformat is like talking to a wall...lol!

For those that are unfamiliar, he's been posting for over a month about his problem with WinME. He had a minor problem that could have been fixed but opted to do a "dirty install" of WinME over the top of itself. He's been told numerous times that the only way to fix the mess he created would be to back up his important files, format the HDD, & do a clean install of WinME, but he simply refuses. Now he wants to do a WinME to WinXP upgrade rather than formatting & doing a clean install. It's another disaster just waiting to happen.

Nick, please come to your senses...I'm not saying this to be a d*ck, but you've struggled with this mess long enough! Bite the bullet & do it the *RIGHT* way! Maybe you'll learn something from the experience....

Indeed - I imagine the neighbour is just as tired of this little drama

... more like October - as well, an equal number of messages were removed (duplicate or 'creeping' posts)

Seems to be a pivotal moment in Nick's computing career - nevertheless, the basic advice is likely the best:

Fix it or forget about it

Thanks for all the opinions ,from those who replied ,I can see that everyone is in agreement on two things ,one I should format and do a clean install and two ,you are all sick of hearing about my problem ? In fact I probably have the order of those incorrect ? Either way ,all replies greatly appreciated !

If you were to upgrade you'd just have a crappy install of XP. GIGO - Garbage In Garbage Out

You could have reinstalled and been happily computing 5+ months ago? What's the point of this drill again?

Hi Nick, haven't been around so haven't read your posts over the last while.

Guys, Nick's been posting here for many years and he's helped many people as well as asking for advice. Lots of his posts have helped to tease out issues and benefitted others, just like the forum is meant to. Patience is a wonderful virtue.

Now, lecture over.....I agree with most everyone else. At this stage, try XP, but from a clean install, definitely NOT an upgrade. If you have the facility, you can always Ghost your hard drive first and if XP doesn't like you, you can go right back to where you are now.

I have largely left ME behind now and all of my systems are on XP, SP2, and running well.

Good luck, and soon you shouldn't need to be posting at all. :)

By the way, I hope you have enough RAM. I've forgotten your system specs but RAM is crucial to XP. MS recommends 128 but I wouldn't touch it with less than 512 myself and I am using 1.0G as standard on XP systems now.
