PLEASE HELP!!!
Hard drive on my laptop was badly damaged and just got new one. Tried using Toshiba's product recovery CD, it starts up then gives an error "Wrong Machine". I was told the problem is a DMI string has been wiped clean and needs to be reentered before the cd can work... it's a licensing issue that those stupid toshiba guys use to make you pay more by taking your computer to an authorized dealer!!!! Anyway, here's a fix that i heard works. I downloaded dmicfg.exe which is supposed to fix this problem but don't have a clue how to edit it in ms-dos (no dos knowledge!!). Here's what i need to do:
1. Open dmicfg.exe file in dos.
2. Edit 4 strings to have manufacturer's name, model name, serial number and version (i have this info, just don't know how to do it.)
3. save the new settings on a floppy and use it to boot my laptop.

Really, all i need to know is how i can open and edit this program in dos, then save it on blank floppy.
Can someone plz plz plz tell me how to do this step by step in detail? I suck at dos, don't know anything. Please help!

thanks,
maria

I do not have a Toshiba and the info given is from doing a google search only.

you do not open and edit "dmicfg.exe" it looks like you run it in dos and edit within the displayed information it provides then save. dmicfg.exe is a program to modify bios information non accessible within bios setup routine. Take extreme care with its use.

read all links below befor doing anything.

Thanks so much for the advice and links! I'd really love to fix the computer myself but maybe i'll just try to get my hands on a full version if too risky by this method.. Anyway, why toshiba even supplies a recovery CD is ridiculous seeing as how lots of people seem to get the exact same problem.

would try first the method in the second link.

would run dmicfg.exe but be very careful on what you change. You might first run it, look around at the data displayed then cancel out of it, that way no changes should be made.

read the last entry on first link and see if the program chgdmi.exe in on your cd. As i said I do not have any knowlege with eather programs.

Was hopeing some one with a toshiba would come along and give a hand :)
