Would someone look at this log

I have had problems staying connected to the internet for the last 5 days now. I have deleted the temp folders and cookies and I have ran As-ware, SpyBot, & SpyBlasterware and found nothing. Here is my HiJackThis log. Thinga aeem to load slower too, I have to type this in my word doc so I will be able to paste it in here quick enough before I get cut off.

I dont see anything particularly ugly, but disabling the below should free up system resources without causing a loss of a notable amount of functionality.

You could also get rid of all the O16 - DPF entires too if you like.

From the info you've given it's logical that the disconnection problem is most likely driver or hardware related, not a spyware problem.

I'd recommend opening the case and blowing the dust out from inside. I've seen heat builtup cause modems to disconnect.

Consider getting your hands on another modem and installing it, then see if the problems continue. For a minimal price it could save you alot of time in troubleshooting that ends up leading nowhere.

Hope this helps

I have this kind of problems every now and then. It was running super just prior to this. I have wondered if it could be the modem. Sometimes I can stay on for hours and other times I get cut off every minute or so and have to wait for a couple of minutes before trying to reconnect. Also a lot of times when it is running bad I have to restart the computer to get connected.

There were a lot of times it would show and act like the modem was disconnected, but was still connected and I would have to shut down the computer completely to actually disconnect. Going to restart would not disconnect the modem. Sometimes the internet would freeze, but the modem would still be connected and I would have to do alt/ctrl/del and after Windows rebooted I would have to shut down completely again to get it to disconect.

I have also wondered if it was my ISP since I have a low connection speed, or the telephone line. But no one else wants to take the fault for this. I was almost ready to give up on having the internet because it was really BAD!

I have an internal modem and have had this problem come and go not too long after I had it installed. It is a Courier V. Everything INP PNP (v.90&x2). We had tried 2 other modems before settling with this one because of connection speed. The most speed I can get is 26000 bps. Most of the time I get 24000 bps. I hear that is not good.

I even changed ISP's because I would spend more time trying to reconnect than actually being on the internet. It has been a lot better since I switched providers, but I still get those days and sometime those days last for a week.

I also thought some of the problems were from spyware or other things. That's why I got all these spyware programs on my computer, hoping this would solve the problem. It does help too, but didn't solve the problem.

What is a good modem on the market now? I don't have anyone to install a modem for me now, so could someone tell me how to do it

If you already tried other modems, other ISP's, scanned for viruses and spyware, AND your modem drivers are installed and working properly, we've ruled out alot of potential culprits for the problem.

Blaming the phone lines is logical, bad/noisy lines do behave in the manner you describe. Ultimately you could test that theory if you had a friend bring in a 2nd computer and see if they experience it too.

I will qualify these statements by saying I'm making logical conclusions given the limited info presented; "there's no subitute for actually being there"

As far as a suggestion for a new modem i'd just go with a cheap one - as the idea is to simply use something different to ensure that there is no problem with existing hardware. The process of replacing it is self explanatory once you get the case open.

Wireless and Satellite broadband might be a high speed option for you if you cannot get typical wired services.

The person who built my computer and installed all of the different modems had brought his laptop and checked out the connection speed and it was still bad. He said at his home he could get almost twice the connection speed.

He lives in side the city and I live a little outside of a city in a different area than he.

I can't believe I have been on for 2 hours now and haven't gotten cut off. For the last 5 days I couldn't stay on for long. I haven't done anything to the computer. This is what I am trying to say. It has a mind of it's own.

I can't afford to get satellite right now. I even had to shut off my satellite TV for a while. Car problems and family things more important. One of these days I will I most certainly will. Thanks for your help.

I was getting bad connection speeds (26,400) till I badgered the phone company to check the switches and lines out here in the boondocks several times. I live ten miles from town. I also made them run a new line to the house from the box out in the yard. The connection was better using my sofware modem (36,000), then I went to WalMart and bought a US Robotics Performance Pro modem, which is a hardware modem, and now my connection is 53,333.

Hi Tammy, something that may be causing
your problem, worth looking into.

O4 - Startup: Internet Answering Machine.lnk = C:\Program Files\CallWave\IAM.exe

I connect at 26400, caused by copper

do you have a phone on the same line? does it get noise? the phone company is a lot better at fixing noisy voice line problems than at fixing bad internet connections.

as mentioned above, the telco should check for bad connections from the pole to the house. Or the outlet you plug the modem into might be corroded.

Computing net My I can’t stay connected 12-18-03

This is strange. About 3 days ago my Word listing in the start menu was gone and I had to do a fix. Things last night were ok and I didn't delete anything except for a link in my favorites. It is still in my recycle bin.

This morning my internet connection had a popup box and wanted me to confirm my password (it shouldn't have to do this) and somehow the popup confirm box only had listed one letter in when it should have had 8 letters. I put the right letters in there and it worked fine. Now I find that my Word program is missing again from the start/programs again. I still have the shortcut that I made long time ago on my desktop for Word and it still works. What is causing this?

Ok, back to the modem.
When I first bought my modem they happened to be all out of US Robotic modems except for a external. I believe this was the name of the first modem I tried. Even the other stores seem to be out for some reason, I don't remember. This was about two years ago. The US Robotic was the brand I was looking for. So to stay with a 90.v I had to get the Courier.

I have talked to my phone company and they said that my phone lines were fine. They never came out to check the line from the pole. They probably won't either because it is underground and runs with the electrical lines to the house for about 250 feet from the main road. They have never checked my secondary connection box located outside my house that comes into the house. Like I said, they said the phone line is fine and who am I to argue about this when I don't know anything about telephone lines.

They said it could be my cordless phone. I even disconnected the phone that the modem is connected to and went direct from the wall to the modem and that didn't change how it acted. I even strung a line from another room jack and got no change, and tried still yet another room wall jack, (Using a heavy telephone line made for modems). Still no change.

I really don't think it is the internet answering machine because it was doing this before I even had gotten this.

Like I said, the connection was so bad that I actually spent for about every half hour trying to get connected to about 5 minutes of actual time connected. I have gotten cut off as soon as about every 30 seconds and the usual would last for 2 minutes, and that would include the time it would take to get my home page loaded. So you can imagine how frustrated I was and I am now. It was doing so good lately and now it seems to going back like it was before.

I don't think the modem connection is corroded. It sits where it is dry and it also has done this within the first 6 months after I bought it.

I've never had any experience with the internet till I got this computer about two years ago and have learned everything pretty much on my own, but my internet experience has been horrible. I actually felt that I was throwing away my money when the connection is terrible like is. Today again, I am having problems stay connected.

Phone line problems can be either in the inside wiring or the outside wiring. Outside belongs to the telco, inside belongs to the property owner. The dividing line is the
NID (Network Interface Device). That is probably the secondary box you mention.

The NID has a test jack for just this situation. If you plug into the test jack and have line problems, the cause is in the telco supported wiring. If you don't have problems, the cause is in the inside wiring.

Try a regular phone in the test jack first.

This site has some general info about line problems including the NID. http://www.pickocc.org/publications/linerepairs.pdf

This ISP has some good general troubleshooting info as well. http://www.elknet.net/support/troubleshooting/telco.html

Make sure your modem has its latest firmware. You should also check with your isp again. There may be a modem initialization string that you could input manually to force a better connection.

Of course, if there is a phone line problem, this will not help.

Do you know any of your neighbors? If so, ask if they are online. If so, are having the same problem. If not, maybe they could loan you a phone line for a few minutes to check connection speed with the laptop. If it is faster at the neighbors house, it would most likely be the lines into your house.

You said the phone line "is underground and runs with the electrical lines to the house for about 250 feet from the main road" this is not good if a phone line is not separated from an electrical line by at least a foot, the line quality degrades, it runs at slower speeds and your modem can frequently give up on it. Its because electrical main cables have alternating current that induces a current in nearby phone lines. On your voice phone you may be able to hear a low humming sound. If you do, ask your telco to move your phone cable away from the electrical power cables.
Do your neighbours have the same probs?

First of all, if it is my underground electrical wiring,There won't be any changes done here. I don't think that I want to dig down 3 feet by 250 feet. Like I said before I can't afford to hire someone to do that either. If I had that kind of money I would have satellite internet and there wouldn't be this problem. lol. I really don't hear any noise in my phone. I will check my phone line with the box outside by the house. It won't be for a couple of days though. I have some Christmas things I have to get done first.

I've lived here for 16 years and I really don't know my neighbors. A few that I do know about, I wouldn't even think about asking to use their phone line.

I will try most of your sugestions and if none of them work I will just have to be patient until I can get satellite internet. Thanks to everyone here for all the help.
