My new Dell Dimension 4100 (933 MHz Pentium III w/ 128 MB RAM) came w/ Works Suite 2001, which has Word 2001, preinstalled. Word crashes alot when I close a file either via the File menu or clicking the close button. At these times, I get error messages saying:
Winword has caused an error in MSVCRT.DLL
Runtime Error: Abnormal Program Termination
Also causes an occasional GPF.
Crashes happen with various programs open.
It also saves 'changes' to Normal.dot even if I only open then close a blank document. Some tool bar buttons work sporadically, too.
I've re-installed and used Word's "Repair" feature. Problems persist.
Dell Tech Support has had me delete some Registry entries and Normal.dot.
They also suggest updating my HP DeskJet 882c printer driver, which I tried today, but don't know if it'll solve the problem yet.
Anything else I should try?

Thanks!

My DELL is only 4 months old, and very high-end, and guess what? My Word does the same exact thing. Not only that, but have you checked inside your "My Documents" folder on the desktop? Word has been placing temp files in there, sometimes 3-5 at a time, and changing the "normal global template". Frequent crashes under the same conditions are happening, and DELL technicians (bless their hearts) can't seem to find a fix for. Microsoft (who wont even acknowlege your presence without a credit card) is of little to no help either. I sympathize. It will be interesting to see if someone out there can help with this issue. Geez, there's so many "issues". {{{{giving serious consideration to purchasing a Mac}}}}

I have the same problem as Mike with "Winword has caused an error in winword.exe" and it won't start it at all. It is followed by an error message of "MFC42.dll" as well as an unknown error. I have a Compaq Presario 5BW120, 600 HHz, running Windows Me. I was able to use word up until 2 days ago. I've done system check, a system restore back a month, defrag, virus check and a few other things.

I am encountering similar issues with a Dell Dimension 4100, for one of my clients. I have eliminated many of the technical possibilities and I am down to the last resort, which will be re-installing the OS (Operating System) once again from scratch. It will not be the first time following this procedure, but it will be the last one. If the problems still persist after that action, it will only determine that Dell did sell a configuration which was not study enough, before putting it out in the market. If you are a consumer, which I know all of you are, I suggest you joint our AAAIE (American Alliance Against Irresponsible Entities). This will be the only way something can be done, let us all come together and face a judge, to form a solid case. This way the passive legal system of USA will not throw off the case and think it's a single isolated issue. It is the only way for us to make this possible and to teach the irresponsible entities to respect the rights of us consumers.
