all of a sudden my system won't shut down or restart properly unless i power off from behind tower.when shuting down, monitor goes blank but system still is running.
help please............

I had the same exact problem. After disabling nearly every driver on my system. With one bad restart after the next, I stumbled across my SpeedStream DSL Modem driver. Once I disabled it reboots and shutdown were no longer a problem. Unfortunately, I messed up my home network connection and for the last couple of days I've been trying to get that up and running so I can get to the new driver (11Mb)I downloaded on another computer. My eternal hobby...make big problems out of little ones, then spend a lot of time fixing it. Side note: Can't get the restore function to work either. So much for that option.

You have to go into your POWER MANAGEMENT options in the Control Panel, then select Home/Office Desk, and change all the settings from Always On, and Never for System Standby, to your preference... IE: 2 hours, 15 minutes, etc. Reboot and this should fix your problem.

chiefsurf - have a look here and see if disabling ndis.vxd in msconfig helps your shutdown problem.
john - to get System restore back:
right click 'my computer and go to properties
go to the performance tab>>file systems>>troubleshooting
check 'disable system restore'
click apply>>ok>>ok>>rebootdo it all again, only take the check out of 'disable system restore' this time. after reboot, try to create a manual restore point by running the wizard. you should have fuctionality back.

I have the same issue - seems that my Alcatel modem is causing a problem - Nvis.vxd error on shut down. If you disable this vxd in msconfig - you cant use the DSL modem though.
Any ideas?

i had the same problem with the speedstream 4060 modem until i updated to the non-supported driver on the efficient site
