Hi
Please try following
restart the computer
press f8 repeatedly to get to windows startup menu
select safe mode and press enter
do the defrag from safe mode
it should work

Good idea to defrag in safe mod, however, also contact the manufacturer and ask them if they have ever had problems like this reported to them. See if they have a patch for it for E--Machine and your OS, or if that is indicative of a faulty HDD. If it is a Mac be sure to let them know that.

I have tried the whole Defragging in Safe Mode thing.... and it just doesnt work, it just doesnt work.....
The way to do it without any problems is by Booting into DOS mode.
Then type the correct command line.
[If you have DOS version 6.0 or later] Boot into DOS mode Make it so that the command is... C:\WINDOWS\DEFRAG.exe C: /F /U /NOPROMPT
It should already say C:\Windows\ just type the rest. And you cannot go wrong because Windows hasn't been loaded, there for there are absolutely NO files that are being in use that stops the defragmentation.
Summary: My 3 year old HP Pavilion 733 mhz 64 Mb 30 Gb wont defrag! I tried to defrag it i guess to free up space . I don't really understand what defraging is but my computer is kinda acting like weird lately...
