W-ME freezes up during virus scan

I have a GenuineIntel, Pentium 4 CPU, running windows ME. Just lately while running the free edition of the AVG anti-virus scan, my computer freezes up completely. I have to shut it down and boot it back up. I have no problems afterwards with it freezing, just while running the AVG anti-virus scan. Most of the time it freezes on files like: C:\program files\windows update63193.bkf .... Does anyone have any ideas on what is making it do this? or how to solve the problem? thanks

I have no idea what is causing the freeze ups, unless the program is eating away so much RAM that the system stalls. Since the program was a free edition, why not just remove it, and use a different virus scan..

It has nothing to do with AVG , I run it with ME and I have no problem whatsoever , must be something else going on . Also haven't seen this complaint from anyone else and there are quite a few AVg users in here .

Yes I have all other programs turned off. I dont use screensavers. I have run AVG since the 1st of NOv 2002, and have had no problems. Its just this past weekend it started doing this freezing up. Always at "bkf" files. Can anyone explains what those are? Is that the backup files or what?
thanks again

I think bkf files are the backup files.

I decided to try a scan after the last AVG update and guess what?? Yep, blue screened right in the middle of the scan. Rebooted, scanned and defragged the drive, ran it again and have had no more problems.
