Winword gdi.exe seems a strange file name, if that's
what it is.

Winword.exe is the program for Word which is usually part of Office (but sometimes part of MS Works).

Seems like you need to uninstall and re-install Word, which should be on the appropriate CD. See what others think first though.

What sue russell probably means is that it is giving an "illegal operation" type error when accessing MS Word. What were you doing prior to having this occur? What version of Word are you using?

Faris & derek w - it has just happened again - the error message is:- winword has caused an error in gdi.exe - winword will now close - if you continue to experience problems try restarting your computer
it varies when it happens but usually when i move from one program to another?

Does Word work OK?

As this seems to happen when you are not using Word, then about the only thing I can think of that might be running is the Office Toolbar (assuming Word is part of Office in your case).

I'm more familiar with W98 but I assume that if you type msconfig in the Run box you will get the System Configuration Facility. If so, go to the Startup tab and untick anything there to do with Office/Word then reboot.

This might shut it up but still leaves the question "why" and you would have to make a shortcut to the .exe shown in msconfig, in order to get to the Office toolbar (or whatever) in future.

I did this way back because I found the toolbar pointless.

Other than Word re-install that's all I can think of.

Aha, it's part of Works Suite in your case then.

Yes, I think that would be worth a shot.

Another thought. It's a long time since I used Works Suite but if you poke the CD in you might find an option to Uninstall or Re-Install just Word.

I would have thought the best option is to Uninstall Word (if it lets you), reboot then Install Word again.

Sorry for being absent as of late.

Are you saying that word does NOT give the error sometimes and sometimes it does? I am not sure why it would be giving an error in GDI.exe as that is a required system file to run the computer, if I'm not mistaken, it runs the Windows Graphics Device Interface core component. Did you change any settings or word or anything like that before it happend?

Faris,

I think you have hit the nail on the head - we have just had a new cannon digital printer installed - which if I am not mistaken would require the GDI file - this could be causing the failures - not sure now what to do - would need I suppose an up to date operating system like XP prof instead of the ME - its obviously too slow for it.
