Help!
I have an assignment due in a week - its finsihed but I can't open them - both two copies of the assignment keep saying
file locked for editing do you want to read only or notify when ready.
I say yes notify and it opens the document and then it says winword has caused an error in winword.exe
even if I pick read only it stills says the winword error message. It doesn't occur with any other document only these two. I have microsft office 2000 and ME

Right click on the document choose "open with" and choose note pad. you might be able to copy and paste the text into a new file. Another thing you can try is opening the file from the aplication. (not double clicking the file from it's folder)

I had the same problem--could not open Word and tried a reinstall etc which did not help. I kept getting the Winword.exe error message. Once I trashed the normal file--the problem was fixed. Thank you Mike!!

My error message: "Winword has caused an error in WINWORD.exe Winword will now close
If you continue to experience problems try restarting your computer"
I uninstalled and reinstalled to no avail.
Finally, I found Mike's suggestion: Trash both Normal.dot
Mike, you're a GOD!!! Thanks, David
