Did you overwrite the ME install? When you boot into XP do you see the old ME Windows folder? And, did you install XP on a separate partition?

Life is more painless for those who are brainless.

"xp is on the same partition"

There's your problem.

You should have created (or used) a 2nd partition for XP. All you needed to do was boot into ME, pop in the XP CD, & wait for it to spin up. A message would have popped up asking if you want to "upgrade (recommended)". You should have then selected "advanced" instead & then directed XP to install in the 2nd partition.

it wouldn't let me, an error mesage came up that read something like "cannot upgrade from millinium edition to XP" so i did a boot setup. also, the reason for it being on the same partition was due to the fact that the remaining unpartitiond space amassed all of 15 mb space

I overlooked your specs.

"ram= 64MB"??

You should not be running WinXP with just 64MB RAM. It runs poorly with 128MB, better with 256MB, decently with 512MB...& more is even better.

Unless someone has a better idea, your only recourse may be to save all your important files, then wipe the HDD & reinstall WinME from scratch.

This will clean the hard drive.....

IBM thinkpad 600 - this will not be good enough for XP, it will be virtually unusable, as it is probably around a 300mhz, the max memory is 288MB PC66 and you need 32MB of that for the graphics.

If you want to change ditch ME and install W2K IMHO.

actually, i recently upgraded the ram w/a 128MB sdram card; i need to change that.

as for the chipset, i was going to gut the computer and upgrade as much as possible, so this is a "for future purposes" ordeal. i just wanna figure out if i had done something wrong, and i did. and as of this point i've done most of what seems to be left that i can do without formatting/purging my hard drive

so moreover, my question now is: "what are some upgrades to get me a moderately well-working XP laptop without gutting another one/buying a new one(i bought it as a prject computer, people)?

That Laptop is beyond XP and uneconomical to spend any more money on, plus the fact it may have a BIOS 8GB Hard Drive Limit, you need a 20GB Hard Drive for XP. Also you have to remember that Laptops rarely run at full CPU speed, so please save yourself hours of miserey and save your pennies for something better IMO!

Your laptop has little resell or trade-in value. Keep in mind that a brand new low end laptop can be had for less than $600. You can get a refurbed/reconditioned one for about $300-400, depending on the specs. Try Amazon rather than eBay.

As others advise.. restore this to an ME system and keep it that way. It's a useful backup (get you on-line) system in event of problems with any newer kit...
