A friend of mine has a dell computer. It came with Windows 98SE. He was sent a Windows ME upgrade from Dell. He did the upgrade but has lost the disk. He bought a OEM disk awhile back and lost the OEM CD. He has the OEM COA. He never used the OEM Win Me CD. When he installed Win me 5 or 6 years ago he did the upgrade. Win Me needs to be reinstalled on top. Can i use my OEM Windows Me and install OEM version over a upgrade? He had alot of viruses and i removed them they are all gone but some files got curupted real bad and i believe installing windows without formatting will do the job. Has anyone ever done this?

Wipe the HDD & start from scratch.

His OEM product key should work with your OEM cd.

The product key he used for the upgrade can be extracted using jellybean:

http://magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder/

or the dos program DIAG:

http://www.62nds.com/62nds/diag.exe

However, the upgrade product key probably won't work with the OEM cd. But it'd be a good idea to find the upgrade key in case you run across another upgrade cd.

So with his product key and your disk you should be able to do an over-the-top reinstall. It should work the same with ME as it does with 98. Check my #3 here:

Can someone delete this message because "I" did NOT ask it. I have enough knowledge for this kind of question. My neighbor useing my wireless connection has logged in with my username. And has asked alot of questions over the past week that i already know.

Why does your neighbor know your CN password?

Tell him to setup his own CN username/password. Why would you allow him to make you look bad?

if you do not have a lease and, it is just month to month, tell him he has to leave at the end of the month. Don't say the real reason, make up something, that is beyond your control, like you need the room because an elderly relative is moving in.
