Word of warning to *ADVANCED* users:

NO MATTER WHAT YOU DO TO YOUR SETTINGS (e.g., io, irq, cmos,etc....) WinMe WILL NOT KEEP the changes you make. It runs in the background basically undoing everything you do all the while letting you believe you are actually doing something. It assumes you are a total moron and will keep its own setting REGARDLESS of what you do. Then to add insult to injury: DOS HAS BEEN REPLACED WITH "VIRTUAL DOS". WinMe has crashed and/or frozen so many times doing simple things like trying to open folders or apps. Also,if you have any partitions that are not windows, you will need something like partition magic and/or Linux to fdisk as the one that ships (what you get when you make the WinMe boot disk) with WinMe will "see" the partitions but will not be able to do squat with them. Argh! If you try a clean install with WinMe you will be MISSING a bunch of DRIVERS you need (video and sound mainly)!!! @$#% You are probably wondering why I am even bothering with it? Only because all the COOL games are on a windows platform; otherwise I wouldn't touch ANY windows apps. Win 98 is sufficient to play games and do generic things (coding in windows is like building a modular house....tear the whole house down just to make a square window round!). If you really need/want to install windows SKIP WinMe and use Win95 or Win98 (Plus! has some decent utilities). Leave the rest to a SOUND OS like Linux : ^)

Better not say to much about it... You'll only be told that you are the one to blame for your problems... Then other people will get into it and the whole thing will turn into a name calling contest.

Well....after a week of trying to figure this all out. I got the low down from techs who have had WinMe training and also from Microsoft techs. It's not a name calling contest but merely pointing out that WinMe will not give you the advanced options and flexibility beyond that of the normal-average-user. From what I was told,WinMe was supposed to make it easier for the average bear, which it does by protecting them from themselves and automating several things, notably networking (which is one of the nicer features). Any ways, Win95 and 98 dual boot just fine with Linux and I'm restoring my pc back to Win98 and Linux (yeah what fun!). So like I said before, not a name calling contest, just saving a few savvy users a little grief....nothing like spending a beautiful Sat. morning ressurecting my pc (and yes I backed up all my files etc to CD).

Go with Windows 2000. Once you've got it running stable, it never crashes, and you can configure it to more or less everything..

I wouldn't say it sucks, but the absence of drivers for it are so frustrating to try to find. I can't play any of my old games, due to lack of proper drivers for video and sound. This is the only down fall in my opinion.

How many WinME Sucks titles are people gonna post here. Doing this is not going to make your problems go away. I guess you just want to voice your opinion or just be heard. Ok we hear you now lets get on to something else.

Oh, this is the person that said her children got ahold of her machine & installed ME & now she is complaining about how terrible ME is. What can you expect with children installing an OS. No telling what they did. Stop complaining and ground the children.
