Argh, okay, I'm really getting annoyed with this. I've already backed everything up, made the boot disk, wiped my hard drive, and now all I'm trying to do is reinstall ME so I can get back to the happy land of being a hopeless computer geek.

I have the CDs with ME info so I can reinstall everything, but I can't get my computer to run them. It doesn't want to read my disk in DOS, where I'm stuck, but it won't let me into Windows either.

What do I do? Please, anyone, reply or e-mail. I'll be checking back.

Oh, yeah, forgot to add: When I try to format the E drive (my CD-ROM drive), it says it can't format a network drive. And it doesn't have any info on my D drive, apparently.

Also, there were two users for the PC. Should I have deleted the usernames before starting? If so, how do I fix things now?

I tried to follow the seemingly good directions at http://www.cyberwalker.com/columns/sep00/210900.html, but they're no help here. What do I do? There must be something I'm missing.

If you used a boot disk to format C:\ windows is gone. This is why you cant get into windows.

The only way to format a cd-rom is if its a cd-rw and your using burn software's format utility. This can only be done in windows.

You mention "cd's with winme info". Do you have recovery disks that came with an OEM pc or a real windows disk?

If you have a real windows disk try this link http://www.burzurq.com/forum/format_reinstall.html

If you have a recovery disk you can search your manufacturers support site, phone line, google or post back here with system specs, make and model and someone will help you with correct reinstallation instructions for your PC.

OEM pc's all do the reinstall different. Cyberwalkers instructions are for those with real windows disks.

Most recovery disks either come with a helper floppy to get them running or the cd will autorun without a boot floppy. To see if your recovery disks will autorun just remove the floppy, insert the recovery cd #1 and restart your computer. If setup begins your in business if it doesnt you may have to change the boot order so that cd-rom is first. Again each computer is different so post back with your make and model number.

I'm running WinME on an E-Machine (I know, I know, but it's all I can afford), 34 megs of ram (I think?). The HD is 15 gigs. It's only a couple of years old. :P

I only have the recovery disc... I don't know where the actual system disc is.

I tried to reboot, but that definitely didn't work. I had two options: reinstall ME (tried it, got nowhere), and the other option left me in DOS. Now it won't read from my E or D drives. When I try to get to them it says, "Invalid drive specification".

Hi Sara,we will try to get this all sorted for you.when you say you Wiped the hard drive clean,i am guessing you used an emergency boot disk and re-formated.if thats the case then the only thing on your HD is the File Allocation tables you no longer have an OS on the drive.SOOO if this is where you are at then you will need a CD with a full install operating system so you can re-install windows. The other case is if you still have the OS on the drive then you can use the recovery CD that came with the puter to bring it back to factory specs. Please let us know which it is and we can help you more.

Type help or dir c:\ If nothing happens it means there is nothing on your hard disk, not even a DOS operating system. Is your ME able to install without a DOS system?

If u have an Emachines and have recovery cds u may be able to reinstall it from the hard drive as if u did not format d, those files are probably there.

**Do a search in dos *.CAB - this will bring up the cab files. This is your installation of your operating system. If u can get into the directory where the cab files are, which is probably D if u have recovery cds this might work.

Also, I have a set of generic cdrom and cdwriter drivers which can be installed on your hard drive which might make your cd rom on reboot be recognized in dos.

Bootdisk.com had some excellent boot cds and as this boot cd is starting in dos it tells u what your cd rom and writer are, usually way at the end of the alphabet, mine was like r and s. My cd rom was not recognized and I loaded the generic drivers from dos and rebooted and it then noted the cdrom.

Hope this helps.

You have create a partition then format the partition.put in win me boot disk at a:\prompt type format c: then hit enter.
this will re-format your partition.when thats finished restart using the win me boot disk select with cd support.look to see what your cd drive is.then for example at a:\ prompt type d:\and hit enter.when d:\ is showing type setup.exe. hit enter.your win me cd should begin to install.
