Hello.
I bought a new computer system (very basic 800mhz, 256ram) with WinME. Also, bundled in the package is Norton2001. However, I've also got Norton2002. Which version (or does it matter?) works best with WinME and uses less resources?
Thank-you
Happy Holidays!

just a suggestion, uninstall 2001 and install
2002 but do a custom install. the only things
you need in nortons which will not cause problems are diskdoctor, windoctor, registry editor, speed-disk and optimization wizard.
windoctor is the most useful. these utilities
are the most reliable and use virtually no resources. personally they are the only parts of nortons that have any real value in my opinion. the rest of nortons is unreliable
and has been known to cause problems on some systems.

Totally agree with guru.
Just for your information, I use Norton products a lot and I have always found it necessary to completely uninstall prior to a reinstall or a new install of Norton anything. That means using add/remove, then rebooting, then searching the hard drive for any mentions of Norton or Symantec and removing those folders, then searching the registry for same and removing those keys. Only then do I reinstall anything from Norton. And, while using LiveUpdate to bring Systemworks up to date again, I always disable the anti-virus programs in ctrl-alt-del before running Live Update. I have often found it necessary also to download only one update at a time, even to the point of expanding the + sign beside the update listed for a particular application and downloading only one of the sub-updates. It can also be necessary to reboot between each download of the sub-updates and to remember to deactivate anti-virus each time. It takes quite a while but it works and you then get a good install. If, after you download one update, you get a message which says "you chose not to install the 1 update available" ignore it because it is usually wrong. Great software, isn't it? But I still like it and use it. Luckily I don't have to reinstall it very often. :)
Norton have an excellent page of advice about doing exactly what you want to do here and it includes a special uninstall tool for Systemworks 2001

IHNNJust a thought, NSW 2001 definitely works OK on ME, I have it.
NSW2002 was specifically written for XP.
XP is based on WinNT\2000 Kernel - hence will probably not work on ME.
If the 2001 version is working OK on your ME machine I should leave well alone.Lesley

I agreement with lesley, I have four PC: Pentium 4, pentium III 1GHZ, Celeron 800 MHZ and pentium II 450 MHZ. All haved win Me OS and Norton 2001, I buyed Win XP and Norton 2002 and installed in all (excepted Pentium II, only install norton 2002): pentium 4 and III no problems, velocity good, works fine. In celeron Win XP slow my system and I need unistall and reinstall Win Me. But Norton 2002 slow my both pc (celeron and Pentium II) and I unistalled it and reinstalled norton 2001, then PCs work fine. (all have 256 MB Ram). If you run Win Me you may choose Norton 2001.

No problem with that. 2001 works fine for me on all ME installations. Haven't tried 2002 on any yet.

I installed Norton Utilities 2001 on my system running Win Me and there are a couple of correctable issuses you should be aware of . Frist of all when running Windows Update under Windows Me errors occur with Norton System Doctor operating ! Check your C:\Windows\Inf folder , it may contain thousands of 0 byte Oem*.inf files. It happen to me and it took me about 20 minutes to delete all of them folowing the instructions off symantec's web site. Also when the disk health sensor is active in Norton Doctor, there is a problem with system restore not creating restore points . Like I stated you can get details on these issuses by going to symantec's web site . After dealing with these problems I find that I enjoy using norton utilites and it has corrected dozens of errors in Windows Me !

Nick
Yes, those things are a nuisance, I read about them at Symantec's site. The way I deal with it, is not to have anything running an Auto, not even the Anti Virus. I just run the various modules as and when I want. I won't have anything to do with 'One Button Check' either!
It's just my opinion but I think NSW has become far too bloated for it's own good. Anyone who has not used NSW before and installs it is liable to be utterly bewilderd.
However, I agree about it's usefulness, especially the Sys.Doc.Lesley

Lesley ,Very good advice . After learning the hard way , I have nothing set to auto and I activate things on a need basis ! Thanks Nick

I've used norton utilities 2001 for a long time... and it was great ! I could defrag 9gb in .. 15 minutes..around that.
Now, since i have winXP, i must install 2002 , because it won't let me install 2001 in XP. Strange...
The fact is, that the defrag in 2002 is now much slower than before, with the 2001 version... I don't know why, maybe it's because 2002 was intended to defrag ntfs instead of fat32 (my fat..) I really don't know...
What do you guys think ?
