Comment:

Every time I close IE5.5 (with WinME), Content Advisor gets reset to "enabled" and the settings are changed to the most restrictive setting.
When I open IE5.5, I get a message "Content Advisor: Please check your Content Advisor settings for missing information..."
To be able to see any webpages at all, I need to open the Content Advisor tab in Tools - Internet Options, enter my password and disable Content Advisor.
Next time I close IE, it automatically resets again to "enabled".
How can I permanently disable Content Advisor?

I don't know the answer . You might try to go back to older setting of IE before 5.5 as a lot of people found that the best way to solve 5.5 problems.

What do you use for a alternate browser. Opera 5 is running really clean for me when I use it in the Windows ME system. It is a free downloa now as it is ad based. if you wnat it ad fre then one time 439 purchase applies. i found it worth the buy as it is only a small program--just over 2 mb and 9mb with java . It comes through when the other two fail. I leave it on surfing without images as i live in the boonies and fast connection is not even a dream

I have the same problem

PLUS it started when using IE5.0, updateing to 5.5 did not solve as suggested by my provider.

PLUS when I click "Disable" the button depresses but nothing happens, I have to open "Settings" button with password, "OK", THEN I am able to open "Disable" with password, "OK", and carry on for that session.

Open IE again and its back to square 1

If you know the answer to this PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, e-mail me, its driving me mad

Content problem
-------------------
To clear the rating policy, open regedit and find the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\Ratings

Delete all the keys and values under that key, including all subkeys, then close all instances of Internet Explorer (or simply restart the machine). The content advisor will now be disabled

I hope that it works for you guys !!

Dell tech support gave me the following fix which seems to have worked:

"In Internet Explorer, on the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
On the Content tab, under Content Advisor, click Settings.
In the Password box, type the supervisor password, and then click
OK.
On the General tab, under User Options, select the User can see
sites which have no rating check box.
Click OK, and then click OK again.

1. Quit Internet Explorer.
2. Check your Windows\System folder to see if a Ratings.pol
file exists. If it does, rename it to Ratings.old.
NOTE: You must be able to view hidden files to view the Ratings.pol
file. To view hidden files with My Computer or Windows Explorer,
click Options on the View menu, click the View tab, click to
select Show All Files, and then click OK.
3. Start Internet Explorer, and then click Options on the Tools
menu.
4. Click the Security tab, and then click Settings in the Content
Advisor area.
5. Type the Supervisor password, and then click OK.
6. Select the Ratings options that meet your needs, and then
click OK.
When you restart Internet Explorer, the changes take effect.
NOTE: Removing and reinstalling Internet Explorer does not resolve
this issue.
NOTE: These steps also prevent the following Content Advisor
message from appearing when you attempt to modify ratings in
Internet Explorer 3.x:
The saved password and the password you typed do not match."

Chris Catton,
I had the same problem...
"Content Advisor: Please check your Content
Advisor settings for missing information..."

So I installed Netscape 6 (free also)..

But for some reason MS doesn't allow my
WindowsME to use the Netscape 6 browser for
everything... I got tired of seeing that
Content Adv... message.. so I came here for
a solution...
Daniel, DANIEL.. THANK YOU DANIEL

REGEDIT
ran EXPORT of registery file (backup just in
case)

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\Ratings
deleted keys..
closed registery..
and rebooted..

PROBLEM RESOLVED...
Miker
