Hello,

I am helping someone with their computer. Windows ME is freezing for up to 10 minutes at a time. This is happening particularly when connected to the Internet. I have removed startup items, optimized graphics, and removed programs I thought might be causing it.

There are no errors apparent, and the computer never crashes, it just hangs for long periods of time. Occasionally, when rebooting, I get a DVD/CD-ROM NOT FOUND message. Any suggestions?

I have also tried all the things listed on 'how to run Windows ME well.'

Thanks,
TADD

If you play games on the internet, you may be overtaxing the 128MB memory.

Also, I would make sure my cooling fans were running properly and check that the present memory sticks are properly seated.

And run a test on the RAM www.memtest86.com

And when you say you have tried everything on my homepage I take it that includes spybot and disabling all scheduled tasks, findfast etc.

If you run a process watching program like WINTOP, when it freezes up you can see what is using the CPU time so much it causes the system to hang

Mark - just as a matter of interest is Wintop guaranteed OK with Windows ME? I have never used it though I know about it and what it does. You can get it here

Hi Trev, well it was originally taken from a Unix program and made to work with Windows. I basically use Win2000 at home now and most other operating systems at work, but still have an ME partition that use solely to surf the net (as ME can't see my NTFS partitions removing the possibility of getting infections or trojans on the important data).
I can confirm that it definitely works ok with ME, and has done since the day I installed it - though 2000 does not like it much. Sadly the reason I have it and also "EndItAll" running is occasionally my system has been hit by scripts, diallers, spyware, you name it I've had it try and execute on ME, so they give me a way of ending a process immediately like you can do in Win2000.

The basic ground rule is do not attempt to uninstall it while it is running.

Wintop is a basic program, download it and give it a try Trev, but I must admit EndItAll is better. you can get it at:

Hope this helps,

Mark
