WinME, DSL and OLD NIC

Have problem here: My system is an Athlon 750 on an Asus MB (model skips mind; will check when I get home). I ordered DSL and received a self-install kit that included a Kingston PCI NIC. The system was running Win98SE. I installed the NIC but 98 couldn't find it. So thinking it mighta been faulty, I had the DSL provider sent me another one -- and that one wouldn't work either! So I was guessing that maybe there's an incompatability issue w/ it and my MB. So anyhow, wanting to get on w/ DSL, I dug thru a box of old hardware and came out w/ a 3Com 3C503 ISA Legacy NIC. Win98 detected it and it worked fine for DSL, despite it's age. But I just upgraded to WinME and now the 3Com isn't detected. Does ME not like legacy hardware?? Still no luck w/ either of the Kingstons, either! So would I just be better off buying a cheap PnP NIC, and if so, which one?
Me hates old hardware. ISA cards of all types and old scanners are particularly hard to get running with ME. I would invest in another PNP NIC. I have a NetGear NIC which works fine.
