I'm trying to hook cable internet to computer.
ethernet card checks out ok...Motherboard is GA 7VTX-H, ati xpert 2000 vid card, and the ethernet card... thats it, so irq conflict is unlikely... I'm STUMPED!

start>run
Type "command" (no quotes)
then type-
ping 127.0.0.1
see if you get a reply. This will tell you if the NIC (network card) is functioning or not.
Jimi_l

Ok pinged card and went ok... sent four packets and received four... less than ten millisecs...
I think the key, is that it won't release the ip... if it released the 169.254.x.x ip
and renewed 169.254.x.x it could be hardware trouble... but it will not release at all...
software bug i think...thx chris any ideas?

Many ISP will not release the IP.Have you tried powering off the modem and PC for 5 min or so to try to get a new one?If it's a static IP then it will just get reasigned anyway.
Can you ping the outside world?
ping www.yahoo.com
or
ping www.lycos.com
What issue specifically are you having? Are you getting sync on the modem?(all green lights)

Sorry Jimi, I'll expand.
This problem is with my bro's rig...down the road.
We are trying to hook up cable internet.
ISP has run in the cable and setup modem, shows locked on... smc 10/100 card installed ok.
BUT now must release the IP...
and it does not so no can do on the site pinging...something is stopping winipcfg from releasing ip...
it must aquire the ISP ip before internet conection will work..
Thx pal

In the control panel, under network(where you NIC card is found)open up the properties for the card itself. It may be listed as "configure".Change the option for "obtain an ip address automaticlly" to "manual" and enter somthing. Also add a subnet and hit OK.It will reboot,go back and see if it stayed whatever you made it(it dosent matter what the numbers are you just want them different). Then change it back to "auto",power off+remove cable connection from modem, and shut down PC.Wait a good 20 min or so and power everything back up and see what you got.

Hi Jimi,
We set the ip and subnet... and they stayed
then put back to auto and got 169.x.x.x againlooks to me, if we got a static ip from the isp we would be rockin???
no?
thx

Hey Jimi
This is Kevin just letting you know that I got online. I took out the dial up modem and used that slot for the nic adapter and everything worked perfect. Might be bad slots. Anyways a big thanks for all the help.
Kevin

If your getting a 169 number you are NOT getting any signal from the cable line,or the modem is faulty. This would also explain the ping and why it wont refresh.
a 169 number is a INTERNALLY assigned ip number. That is to say if the PC cant find input from anywhere else it makes up its own,and its allways 169 #'s,I would say bad modem or no signal from the cable.
Now its THEIR problem. It's time to talk to a higher up and explain the situation.Jimi_l
