WININIT.EXE file`s size is 0KB,so Win ME says that it is missing or unable to load. When i replace it with WININIT.exe from an *.cab file, which size is 45,2 KB PC hangs up.Did anyone have problems like this one and what i have to do?

You need to find a new source for a better download your copy is not stable. Find a better copy and then do a fresh install. I have not had a problem with my install and Ive had it running for two weeks without any problems.

How do I get a better download and install Wininit.exe? I can't even bootup to Win98. The file was infected with a worm virus.

When booting Press F8 and choose DOS then:
1. Get into whatever source you have W98, CD-ROM, hard disk. etc.
2. type: extract win98_43.cab wininit.exe
3. type: copy wininit.exe c:\windows

I been as well infected with W32 worm and MacAfee suggested to delete which I did.
I start getting MS Prompt screen after boot
is complete with the string "wininit.exe finished". I did try to extract and copy this file to windows directory but it does not help. Any suggestions, please reply.

I got this virus as well and Norton picked it up and put it into quarantine however, it could not repair it... any suggestions?

I got the w32/MsInit.worm.b warning from McAfee Virus Scan as well, even after a fresh reinstall of Windows ME. My other ME System has it as well. Symptoms are loss of cursor control for 5 seconds every 10 seconds or so. Very frustrating! Is this a real virus/worm or what?
How do I get a fresh wininit.exe file? The instructions from Carlos above (2. type: extract win98_43.cab wininit.exe) is for Win98 NOT ME!! There is no win98_43.cab file on the ME install CD. Does anyone know the appropriate .cab file for winit.exe on the ME Install disk?
Thanks!

I've got Win98 (2nd Edition) and MacAfee quarantined it on me too. It's making me crazy. I've reinstalled Windows five times, to no avail. I'm going to contact MacAfee.

1. When booting up your machine use "F8" to get to the Safe Mode Menu.
2. Once there hit "Shift and F5"
3. This will get you to a Dos Prompt. Change directory to Windows.
4. Delete the file Wininit.exe
5. Reboot your computer
These steps will get you back into your system. I am not completely sure what is causing the problem but this solution has worked for me on 7 different computers.

This has got to be a microsoft bug. On eight separate computers Norton 2001 has quarintined this file as virus infected. Five units were upgraded from win98se and three were clean installs on fdisked hard drives.Deleting the file from the system has not caused any problems but within two weeks the file reappeared on the five computer network and for four days captured the "virus" again until all instances were quarantined.

Windows 95/98 does not allow a .DLL file to be replaced if the DLL is currently loaded into memory. To solve this problem, your installation program must copy the new .DLL files to the user's machine, giving each new .DLL file a temporary name that is different from that of the corresponding old .DLL file. Your installation program must also copy a file called WININIT.INI to the user's machine. The WININIT.INI file is processed by the WININIT.exe program when the system is restarted, before any DLLs are loaded. The WININIT.INI file specifies the destination path and filename for each new DLL.
The WININIT.INI file contains a [rename] section that specifies the source and destination path and filenames for the new DLLs. The entries in the [rename] section have the following syntax.
DestinationFileName=SourceFileName
The following syntax is used to delete a file.NUL=SourceFileName
The following example shows a [rename] section from a WININIT.INI file.[rename]
C:\WINDOWS\Fonts\arial.ttf=C:\WINDOWS\Fonts\arial.win
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\advapi32.dll=C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\advapi32.tmp
When the system is restarted, it searches for a WININIT.INI file and, if it finds one, runs WININIT.exe on the file. After processing the file, WININIT.exe renames it to WININIT.BAK.The DestinationFileName and SourceFileName must both be short (8.3) names instead of long filenames because WININIT.exe is a non-Windows application and runs before the protected mode disk system is loaded. Because long filenames are only visible when the protected mode disk system is loaded, WININIT.exe won't see them, and therefore, won't process them.

Sounds like you guys are dealing with the Bymer worm virus. Please click HERE for removal instructions.

ive had the same "wininit.exe missing or unable to load", "press any key to continue"message display on start-up. for almost a year i just pressed any key to continue w/ no problem. then just yesterday my computer didnt start after i get that message again.i can only boot on safe mode. please help...im totally lost.
