WindowsUpdate *.bkf files

I was wondering if it is necessicary to keep the *.bkf files located in my hidden Program Files/WindowsUpdate folder. There are around 1200 files, each taking about 150-400 bytes. These files take up approx. 18.7 MB (size on disk) and I am wondering if the sheer number of them (1,200) could be slowing down my computer while not doing any good. Can all these files be deleted?
Also whenever I open up IE, a program called Wuauboot comes up, which won't keep closed as long as I am still connected to the internet. I have all my files updated and have searched for a file called wuauboot on my computer and not found it. How can I get it to not open up.

Can't say about your first question off the top of my head, but Wuauboot.exe is your Windows Automatic Update feature. It is present on my PC.

That sounds like a lot of *bkf files. After checking my Windows Update folder,I have two *.bkf files equaling 1kb each. The whole folder = 355kb with 59 objects.
Might sound like I've missed an awful lot of updates, but I don't think so.

I added the deletion of files in c:\Program Files\WindowsUpdate to Delindex some time ago.
Here's the rationale from the notes:
These are files you downloaded from the MS Windows Update web site. Once you install these files, they are no longer needed. The contents of the Windows Update folder are deleted except the wuhistv3.log (Windows Update history log)and austate.cfg (your Automatic Update preference). See MS KB article Q193385.
