I really have a problem. I have an old Gateway that had WinME and it kept locking up (the infamous blue screen). Well I was restoring to an earlier date thinking this might help. Well in the middle of restoring, it locked up an all I could do was power down. I tried everthing I knew before doing that. Now it won't start up. No OS found. It is like it is in limbo somewhere. What can I do? Can I buy a WinXP and install it? I also have a CD for Win98SE What is your suggestion?

"What can I do? Can I buy a WinXP and install it?"
You don't have the specs to run XP.
The "infamous blue screen" that you mentioned should have given you a clue as to what the problem is...too late now. In my experience with WinME, system restore should not be relied upon. In fact, I usually recommend disabling it.
You mentioned 98SE but do you have the disc for ME?

No, I don't have the disc for ME. I bought the HD used a few years ago, and it served me as well as could be for a while until it started freezing up everytime I was on it for awhile. Then upon restoring it really froze. I have the 98SE disc, as I have another computer with that on. These are in Florida, and I am not there now. I have XP here now. Will be back in Fl. in a month or so. Thanks for your reply

Make sure your CPU isn't overheating. Do you regularly clean the dust out of the case? If not, now might be a good time.

With Win ME not working, what do I need to do to install Win98SE? Will it just install when I insert the disc? It informs me that I am trying to install an earlier version. Do I need to install 98 then update to 98SE? Will all drivers be alright with 98SE over ME?

Your best bet is to completely wipe the hard drive, reformat as FAT32, then install Win98SE. Some generic drivers will probably load up during the installation, but there's no guarantee that Win98 will have ALL of them. You'll probably have to search for drivers for the motherboard chipset, video, sound, network, etc.

I don't know what I have to do to wipe the hard drive and reformat. I guess maybee I better take it to the shop. Thanks

I think your getting the earlier version error because its seeing ME loaded.
Take it to the shop? Whoa.. hold on there.. you would be better off trying to get a ME disc off ebay. ($30US) Maybe you can install it over itself and get things running again. If your not worried about losing data..do what jam suggests and put 98se on. 98SE and ME are pretty much the same.
This link explains how to format/reinstall the operating system. This info will work if you have a windows me disc.
Should i put a question here? :)

Adding...
Disable system restore.. Nothing but trouble.. Another thing i suggest but other might tell you different is.. disable all forms of power management and the screensaver.
Should i put a question here? :)

When I looked on E-Bay, There were two types of Win ME. Which do I need, the upgrade version or the full version that says if you don't have windows? Since I had Win ME before crash, will just the upgrade work? Thanks, you are a big help.
nelliebee

you can do a full install of Me with the upgrade cd, if you have a of an earlier version of windows, like 98se, which you state you have.
Might want to consider this before spending any money.
http://www.puppylinux.org/downloads...This can also be used to test the hardware, to rule that out as your problem. No point buying software, if hardware is the problem.
You could also install the 98se you have just to test the hardware.larry

How can I download linux, when It tells me no OS found? I just don't know much about this stuff.nelliebee

you would have to use another computer, which I assumed you were doing to post these messages. It would also need a cd burner and, software to enable you to burn an ISO file.

After my long experience and many other users, original Windows ME is probably the most unstable and buggy one among Windows. However, it can be consiberably ameliorated and stabilized by changing its main shell with Calmira XP 4.0 launched in March 2006 (originally used in Windows 3.1). Two years ago, after using Calmira XP 4.0 grafted as new shell on Windows Millennium, I experienced it is very useful. My former Win-ME was very buggy and unstable, but this new graft of Windows ME + Calmira XP now became well stabilized and stony-hard. We used them perpetually on 4 older computers & a laptop during 2 years with no reset nor any bugs, i.e. perfectly functioning WinME + CalmiraXP4. (by Yoshamya)
