from a microsoft tech;
This appears to be affecting many users today. May I suggest waiting a couple
of days and trying again.

i had the same kind of problem. try downloading the updates one at a time, or grouping a few smaller sized updates for download. if you can't get them all try back later like the other person said. when you first attempt an update you have to give permission for MS to scan your computer. make sure you've done that. it wouldn't hurt to run scandisk or some other diagnostic program, too, just to check for other problems.

Hi Col,
I had the same problem with Windows updates not finishing the download and telling me it was unnsuccessful, I have since had success by temorarily turning off the firewall until the download had completed, it's been fine so far, give it a try, might work for you too.

Have a look at this article and make sure you disable your anti-virus and firewall before trying any download. Then as stated above, install them one by one.

Hi guys. I had the same installation error message too. Everytime I tried to download something it said installation failed because of an unknown error. I told Microsoft and got this response back today:
"I understand that you are unable to download from our site and getting an
"unknown error" code. This error message can occur if Internet Explorer
is damaged, corrupted or has a missing file.

> * First click on Start and then click on Find/Files/Folders
> * Search for the inseng.dll file in the C Drive
> * Locate the copy of this file that is in the System32 Folder
> * Right click on this file with your mouse and choose copy from the pop
> up menu.

> If a prompt to overwrite the existing file is present, select YES.

heard it on techtv thescreensavers,microsofts
windows update server is down,or was down.
all or most updates were failing, due to a software glitch, in their windows xp server
software.
so it's not your pc thats messed up ,its microsofts. they didn't know when it would be fixed, they have to get a 4 year old to come in on overtime, to reprogram it with crayola
xp crayons.

I have the same problem and "inseng.dll" didn't solve it.
Coincidence or not the problem ocured after instaling Visual Studio .Net on Windows 2000 Professional.
