Comment:

A friend has an old computer she bought with WinME installed. When the wheels fell off she re-installed. But now she has no updates, and only dial-up access. Oh, and only the drivers that came with the computer.

AFAIK autopatcher for WinME is no longer around. But is there something else like that? Downloading a full set of updates would take her for ever. Even if they are available. Are they?

You can configure Windows ME to download the updates from Microsoft. The process is not so tedious and worth the trouble to get the safety patches. The drivers are also available for sound, video, etc.Take note of the model name and engraved numbers on the chips present on the motherboard.Use Google to find the drivers.Keep a copy on cd-r for future use.
