Name: Nick R (by Nick Ritchie)
When going to the Windows KnowledgeBase ,I stumbled on a download for Windows Script 5.6 and Windows Me is included as one of the items this download was related to. I first was reading up at the knowledgebase on a Windows Installer Clean Up utility. I have a problem unintalling some of the apps in ADD/REMOVE ,and using the clean up utility to remove the Windows installer and then reinstall the package again ,to make sure its not corrupted. Only problem is that I may have to reinstall many or all of my current apps ? Back to Windows Script 5.6 ,Anyone in the know on this download ?
Thanks Nick

Most certainly, I've been recommending it for years now. It's up to version 8825 which is a tad higher than ie 6.00 SP1's 6626. Strange MS doesn't promote it better than they do but I've witnessed four seperate versions available from that site beginning with the identical package that comes with ie 6.00 SP1. 6626, 8515, retro 8515 to dispex.dll 6626 for win98 problems which has been retained even into the current 8825 version for 9x systems. As a side note the JScript they refer to is JavaScript by a different name, different year different flavor (name if you will) I guess but still the same thing. The package will run with ie 5.50 SP2 and 95 as well, only requirement I can see is that you need at least ie 5.
You won't find a cleanup utitlity for version 2 of the Windows Installer, only for version 1 and it don't work for version 2.
Opps! Old news above and the new good news is that MS finally done something about the above situation.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301So did I.
To answer the call for reinstalling Windows Installer files and checking for any corruption within, I wrote an inf file that will do that for you. Windows Installer can only be removed manually and it's involved also doing nothing about registry entries. My inf does CRC check on all files required for your system and if any fail they are replaced, and registry info is renewed.
RedoMSI.infYou won't need to uninstall any msi or msp installed apps with RedoMSI.inf method or by direct manual replacement of files either. It appears that if you use the new msicleanup utitlity you may well have to reinstall those apps that were installed via the MSI method. BUT for those apps that do NOT have a listing in Windows\Installer folder (right click properties, summary tab for info) you would be fine and these same apps will NOT have their Add/Remove Programs entries altered. Which begs the question what apps are you having troubles with? MSI installed (above) or non-MSI installed (below)?
I'm sure you know of the sometimes in order to uninstall an app one has to reinstall it first trick? After that simple approach manual deletion of leftover files, folders and registry info follows. Especially under this Key:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall]
And MSI installed apps should NOT be treated to this method - they are supposed to be smart enough to do everything in this paragraph themselves.FYI - the new MSI cleanup utility invokes msiexec.exe which means I have my doubts as to whether it actually reinstalls the Windows Installer files themselves as RedoMSI.inf does or if it is more concerned with the MSI installed app's database corruption as recorded in the Windows\Installer folder? I strongly suspect the latter and ONLY doing the latter.
