I am trying to find out what causes Windows ME to run in the background. I will not be on my computer and then I hear the harddrive going like crazy. I do a ctrl alt del and cannot see anything in there that would cause this. I have heard this happening to other people I know as well. Any Ideas? P4 1.7, 256 PC 800, 30gb Quantum drive, Geforce MX 200, Any help would be great Thanks

you can set the harddrives to shutdown after a set amount of time. start-settings-control panel-power options- turn off hard disks after-use drop down window to select.click apply then ok.

Drive paging in background is fairly common. Try defrag. Run regedit, export registry to temp file. Import same file to condense it..It writes back without gaps. You will notice a difference.

Win ME is doing things like system restore. At certain times it will do stuff like backing things up and this can cause a lot of disk access.

Dont worry... thats normal for windows ME... you can tweek most of it away if you want to Regards Miro

It gathers PCHealth information every 10 minutes by default. Look in your Task manager ... you can disable this if you want.
