Comment:

ok big problem.

i was running scandisk thru DOS on my winME laptop (because scandisk kept restarting itself in windows) and it stopped half way through the surface scan because it encountered an error that couldn't be fixed (it had corrected 15 errors successfully before this happened)

i ran scan disk again just to be sure and now its detecting a whole load of errors during the directory structure scan that weren't there before (long file names or sumthin).

now, when i restart my computer, it goes past the windows start up screen and then i get a blue screen of death saying:

While initializing device IOS

Windows protection error. You need to restart your computer.

system halted.

i can start in safe mode ok...

i have undo disks i made during the scandisk, but i don't know how to use them...

Hi Jotsy, hello everyone

Assuming you created the undo disk on a floppy you would use this command.

scandisk /undo a:

thanks.

i know you shouldn't run an undo disk if you've made changes to the drive. would running the second scan disk have changed the drive?

would you suggest i use the undo disk from the second scan first and then the undo disk from the first scan?

(i ran scandisk twice and made seperate undo disks each time)

Hi Jotsy, hello everyone

Personally I would not try and run undo for the first scandisk and since the problem occured after the first one I highly doubt running the undo for the second scandisk will help.

Many different things can cause the Protection Error when booting up. Although we know yours was the result of the scandisk we can check the items that normally cause the error and also allow you to start in Safe-Mode.

Start the computer in Safe-Mode.

Go to Start and Run and type msconfig then click on OK.

Click on the win.ini tab at the top.

Double click on Windows there to expand it.

Is there anything next to the run= line?

Best Regards,
Mesich

ok, this is ridiculous....

it seems after doing that undo... i now can't get into safe mode either... it loads up as far as displaying the mouse cursor on screen, and then freezes....

also, running scanreg in DOS seems to hang. it will show the "backing up system files" message at the bottom... but then after a while the C:> cursor reappears in the top left hand corner (with the scanreg screen still up). PLus i can still run DOS commands while its like this....

Hi Jotsy, hello everyone

Let try a scanreg /fix

Although I believe it will also freeze it certainly won't hurt.

Also, are the .cab files on the hard drive or do you have your WinME disk?

Mesich

no scanreg /fix doesn't work either...

no i don't beleive the .cab files are on this computer since i don't belive the previous owner ever reinstalled windows. I will try an locate the WinME disk but i'm not sure if i'll be able to find it.

I know i have my own personal Win98 disk... if its possible to reinstall a different version of windows without losing all the data on my hard disk....

Hi Jotsy, hello everyone

The .cab files could very well be on the hard drive even though Windows was never reinstalled. Every computer I install Win98 or WinME on I first copy the .cab files to the hard drive and then run the setup from there.

Check this location on the hard drive for the .cab files, as it is the most common place for someone to put them.

C:\Windows\Options\Cabs

Also check for a directory named WinME within the root directory of the C: drive.

No, you will not be able to install Win98 over the top of WinME preserving all of your files and programs. You can upgrade from Win98 to WinME using a Full version CD but no way to go from WinME to Win98 without formatting.

Mesich

Hi Jotsy, hello everyone

No, you can call off the dogs searching for the WinME disk. :-)

Were they located in the C:\Windows\Options\Cabs directory?

I gotta run my son somewhere and pickup the little lady from work in about 10 min.

Hope to hear back from you before I have to leave.

Best Regards,
Mesich

Hi Jotsy, hello everyone

I shant be late picking up the little lady from work, it would make for a most unpleasant evening. :-)

Go to the directory C:\Windows\Options\Cabs and then type in setup.

This should launch the WinME install.

One thing to be sure of, when the install asks where to install, ensure it is the same directory that Windows currently resides. This is normally C:\Windows

If it comes up as C:\Windows.000 remove that and replace with C:\Windows

You should not loose any programs or their associations by doing such.

Let us know how it goes. I will be back in about an hour.

Best Regards,
Mesich

ok... one problem now...

to install windows, it has to run scandisk... but scandisk keeps detecting this "invalid long filename" and so won't allow me to continue with the installation...

now what?

Hi Jotsy, hello everyone

Go to the directory and instead of running the command setup run
setup /is

Note the space after setup. :-)

ok cool, this looks promising. now all i get is a message during setup saying that the directory C:\windows contains a directory called "desktop" which i need to remove or rename... i'm guessing its ok to just do that in DOS rite? how do i do that?

Hi Jotsy, hello everyone

I must say I've never had a install over the top ask to delete or rename a directory.

Let's just rename it to be safe instead of just deleting it.

Go to the C:\Windows\> prompt in DOS.
Type rename desktop desktopold

Mesich

Hi Jotsy, hello everyone

You are very welcome. Glad to hear everything worked out.

I would backup all my important data at a minimum.

Also download and run AIDA32. It will give you a list of all the hardware and software on your computer.

If you can't find your WinME CD I would also get the Cabs folder burnt onto a CD. This will allow you to do a clean install on the new hard drive if you do decide to get one.

Do you have the product key code for WinME?

If not let me know and I can show you how to retrieve it of your hard drive.

Best Regards,
Mesich
