OK. One day i turn my computer on and a blue screen comes up on loading:
"Windows protection error. You must restart your computer. System halted."
So i restart manually and go into safe mode succesfully. The problem is that every time i restart i get the same error message- hence it won't load normally.

It was working fine beforehand(Accept from freezing). Recently installed sofware includes Nortan AntiVirus 2004 - Yeah i know. And before you ask, yes i tried to uninstall it in safe mode but i can not. I also scanned for virus's and there are none.

I attempted to go into the registry and delete a couple of values but it did not work. So called solution was to delete SYMTDI and symvnte386 but just created an extra error message.

So i go-OK time to put in the good old system restore disk. I select the option to restore but the following error occurs:
"error #96. The image you are attemting to restore is not valid in this machine."
So that does not work.

So i'm left in square one with no possible solution. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried actually running System Restore and restoring to a day previous to this problem happening?

I tried to put the system restore disk in then restarting. I can use some sort of second chance function but i cant as it is not available and i have not made a previous backup of my system. Basically the only disks i have are a Restore floppy and a restore CD that dont work as error described above occurs.

There must be some sort of driver conflict in my hardrive but i have no idea how to resolve it. Hope this helps.

See if this link helps you, WINDOWS PROTECTION ERRORS
Also "I tried to put the system restore disk in then restarting" ??
Boot to safe mode, then click start/programs/accesories/system tools/ and scroll down to system restore and choose a restore point to a earlier date (as Jennifer SUMN says) Not a restore cd

Thanks for all of the suggestions. My computer now loads up normally.

I managed to find out how to access MS-DOS(whatever that is) and type in "cd\windows\command ENTER
scanreg/restore ENTER". This enabled me to restore my registry to a time before the problem which seems to have done the trick(was very surprised) (i must have downloaded something?). Also i found that I can use System Restore but it was disabled at the time. I think i'll activate it.

Thanks a bunch

"MS-DOS(whatever that is)"

Hmmm - that's worth an eye roll (or two)

System Restore is one of WinME's features, similar to XP, and can be a real life saver.

You've employed the option to revert to an earlier version of the registry, as in Win98 (more or less) with Scanreg. In WinME this can also be accomplished from within Windows (unlike 98)

None of the above has anything at all to do with any sort of 'restore CD' - those usually wipe your drive and restore the OS as it was when first installed (when they work)

I agree; Computing.Net participants need to proofread
