I recently recieved a windows protection error after booting up my computer. I started my computer in safe mode and tried some of the steps listed on the microsoft support site. After selecting "force compatability mode disk access" under msconfig, my computer now boots. However I can't change my display settings and my cd-rom doesn't work. I know this is due to the selection I made under msconfig. The problem is, WHAT DO I DO NOW? I've tried updating the drivers for everything I could. I tried taking out some of my memory(even though Its not new) and I've checked all the connections inside my computer. Ive ran norton antivirus and found nothing. The problem first started after I installed norton utilities 2002 and norton anti-virus 2001. I also istalled EZCDCreator 5.0 platinum. However I tried uninstalling them to no prevail. What do I have to do so I don't have to use "FORCE COMPATABILITY MODE DISK ACCESS"? I've looked all over the microsoft support site but it doesn't give any solutions. I've tried contacting them to but my DSL is acting up ever since I got back into windows. By the way, my directtvdsl is new too. But I've restarted many times after installing it with no problems(before my error). I'm thinking about dropping my computer from the top of the stairs, but I'd rather get some advice first. Someone please help!! By the way, system restore wouldn't restore me to before the error.

It may time to reinstall the OS. If the registry is so messed up from so many apps and entries screwing up it may be worth while to just redo. Not fun but sometimes it relolves a lot of problems and headaches.
If the System Restore won't even find a point to restore to, it sounds like the
registry is corrupted to me.
Do you have a backup registry through Norton? If so maybe try that before before reinstall. Your programs should be kept by the reinstall but your printer drivers, and periphs generally are not and have to be reinstalled. Write down as much of the Device Manager info as you can( modem type,NIC,sound card,, and check to make sure no yellow exclamation points are showing up there. Also you may try to turn off the Advanced Power Management in the BIOS if you know how to get there. Some times Windows just needs to be led by the hand. Hope this is helpful. Rick
