Comment:

Whenever I switch on the PC, a blue screen comes up with "Windows Protection Error. Please reboot. System halted."

It starts in safe mode, and I have done a thorough scan and checked for spyware, but no luck.

Before this happened, the computer had not been shutting down properly - the background image froze and broke up quite often and it took a reboot to be able to shut it down properly.

Can anyone help me........

Hi,
Have you tried restoring the pc to a earlier point before your troubles? You may have a registry or a device conflict. You may also have a bad or corrupted video or sound driver. Try these steps.

1. Do a system restore; this site will walk you through it - http://www.windowsreinstall.com/install/tips/winme/tswinme/system_restore.htm#Running%20System%20Restore

2. There is a site that will walk you through repairing and or restoring the registry. http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/1999111116313539

3. This site will show you how to disable any startup programs that may also be the culprit.
http://netsquirrel.com/msconfig/

Try each one of these sepratley to see if you can solve.

Thanks for the suggestions, unfortunately:

1 - System Restore has never worked on my computer (I have just assumed it's one of the many special features of ME that doesn't work)

2 - Scanreg reports that there are no problems with the registry.

3 - I have tried the selective startup, but even the most basic startup doesn't make any difference.

I would be extremely grateful if someone can help....

Hi,
Try Did you try uninstalling the video and or sound drivers. Try that and reinstalling them. You may have a corrupted driver.

this is a bad driver and is most likely your modem or NIC. the reason it works in safe mode is the drivers for these two items dont load in safe mode. Take them both out and add them back in one at a time until you find the issue. Then get new drivers and reinstall. If you dont have a nic and only a modem, then you are lucky in that you know which one it is.

I have what sounds like exactly the same problem. Have gone through all suggestions on the Microsoft Support site and disabled all likely devices in current hardware profile but still get the error.

Like guyshahar, can boot up in safe mode ok.
