I have win98 but i had winME installed but i thought there was a conflict with it and my new NEC FE950 19" monitor so i uninstalled it and went back t0 98. I now am stuck in 16bit color at 640X480 resolution. I tried switching to high 16bit at 1024X768 but when i restarted, and after the Win98 screen came up when it was booting it gave me a black screen and said Windows Protection error your computer must be restarted. i got this same message except it was blue when i was running ME. this is only when i try to change the display settings. so i restarted and am now still in 16bit color. whenever i try changing the color and resolution settings and restart i get this warning and am forced to restart back to 16bit colo. i uninstalled my video card drivers(ati rage fury maxx 64mb on the NEC FE950 and an ati mach64 2mb on a Compaq 171FS 17"monitor) then i reinstalled them but still i cannot get out of 16bit. i am thinking of just reformatting the hdd and reinstalling win98. will this fix everything?? i do know how to reinstall and everything so that is not a problem. its just that i was thinking there might be some easy fix that i am just being very dumb and not noticing. Also my mobo is a gigabyte 7zm. Thanks, Bill

Firt of all you are probably in 16 color mode trying to get to 16bit color mode. OK go get the latest drivers for your card: http://support.ati.com/drivers/winme/winme_4127942.html(rage Fury MAXX). pull out the other card and delete all drivers for it and the fury Maxx. Re-Boot! Windows will find Video card....choose Have Disk and point to the dir you have the New Fury MAXX drivers in(remember you were suppose to DL them right?)
OK let it install & re-boot...is everything alright so far?

I had a similar problem and thought that it was something to do with my video drivers. Before trying anything too drastic, just check that your monitor refresh rate is set correctly for the number of colours you want.If I had done this then I would have saved myself a lot of time mucking about.
