First and foremost, I am by no means an expert, so techie jargon will do me no good (but I do know where the power button is!!) I recently upgraded to Windows ME, and am getting the "blue screen" error, telling me to restart my computer. This only seems to happen while I'm online. I have a Compaq 5304, ME version 4.90.3000.
I checked around the net to troubleshoot on my own, but this happens neither at starup nor shutdown, but rather in the middle of internet stuff. My machine has also taken to spontaneously restarting (also while online). It seems to happen while multiple things are open (i.e. msn, icq, winamp, search windows - all of which are the lates versions). A new addition to my multitude of gliches is that when it restarts, everything looks fine, but does not operate (mouse pointer moves, but doesn't open anything). I press ctl-alt-del and it tells me that explorer is not responding, so I have to restart, then all is well....until it shuts off on me again....endlessly frustrating.A techie friend of mine told me that my computer may be getting too warm (??), but it never had these "too warm" problems before upgrading to ME. Alot of the troubleshooting info I have found seems to point towards drivers that need to be upgraded, or an incompatible anti-virus program (I use Norton 2002). I should also mention that most of this started after i upgraded from ME to XP (worked terribly) and back down to ME.
Could someone pleeeease help me, before another senseless act of computer-cide is committed??
Thank you so much!!!!

Try point 16 of this post first, then the others

I will try adding a firewall. I defrag about once a week, and scandisk before I defrag. It also scandisks everytime it reboots due to crshing. I'll go in manually to delete my temp files, but I also have it set up not to save any temp files when I go online, as I don't want to waste space. I'll also try the others if this doesn't work. Thanks
