I am running Windows ME on a self built PIII 500. All was well until I decide to upgrade from 256mb ram to 384mb. Each chip is pc100 ecc. Two of the chips are PNY one is from Crucial. OK now get this, I can get any two of the three chips to work in the first two slots, if a chip goes into the third slot I get the Windows Protection Error. It will start in safe mode no problem. I used MSConfig disabled everything I could(ie. Win.ini, system.ini, all vxd's, startup...) and still no go. Any idea's?

Sounds like a bad memory slot on your motherboard. If you have 4 slots, try using the 4th slot.

You never mentioned board type or BIOS version. Are you sure they support more than 256 Megs?

The board is a Matsonic MS7112C. The bios is award pnp. I just flashed the bios so it would recognize a 40gb drive. When I bought it it said upgradable to 768mb ram. It only has 3 Dimm slots. I dual boot with BeOS which seems to run fine and recognizes all the ram...

You need to isolate the problem to the mobo or ram stick. Check each individual stick of memory in a slot that you know works. Next you can check the other dimm slots to make sure that those are okay. If you didn't get any errors -- good luck --- no just kidding. You need to check the mobo manual for proper ram upgrade make sure there aren't any strange jumper settings you might have overlooked. Check your bios and make sure the cas, cas-ras, and cas precharge are set to your memory specs. IF this does not work try another bios flash on the mobo and if all else fails replace your mobo and memory. Hope you kept your receipts. Good luck!
