Hi,
I originally had the Windows Media player 7 on my computer. I downloaded the Windows Media Player 9. I also downloaded and installed the System Restore update so that I could create a restore point as they suggested on their web site. I created a restore check point and then installed WMP 9. At installation, the program also created a System Restore check point. The new player did not play CDs without terrible distortion. (I had the minimum system requirements.) I did a system restore of the check point the program created, to get rid of it and get my old player back just like they said it would do in their "read me" file on the web site. What happened was after the system restore and reboot, the shortcuts for the WMP were to the set up file for WMP9. I could not find WMP7 anywhere. I found a folder for WMP9 in my Progam files on the C drive so I tried to delete it thinking it was interferring but it wouldn't delete saying that the file was running. I had a copy of WMP7 download exe. file on my hard drive which I had saved when I installed it last year so I tried to reinstall it but when installation was complete it created shortcuts to the WMP9 setup files again. Then I tried to reinstall WMP9 again and after the installation and restart, I got an error message:
"An internal application error has occured".
What a pain. I only installed it because they said I could restore to my old player using System Restore if I didn't like it. Now I don't have either.
Enter Winamp!
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Angie

Angie if you haven't already try going to www.microsoft.com/downloads and get the install file for Windows Media Player 7.1; here's a link which should work.
http://download.microsoft.com/download/winmediaplayer/wmp71/7.1/W982KMe/EN-US/mp71.exe
You should first uninstall version 9, then restart, and then try running this one.
If it doesn't allow you to install it or if it keeps creating incorrect shortcuts as you describe, try downloading and installing a utility called Registry Mechanic:
http://www.winguides.com/regmech
It's a trial version but when you run it it'll hopefully be able to clean up any discrepancies in the Windows registry related to the media player files.

thanks for your reply.
I already had the install file on my computer. That is what I meant when I wrote "I had a copy of WMP7 download exe. file on my hard drive" in my post. I didn't know it was called "Install file". That's what wouldn't install. Also, the only way to uninstall WMP9 in Windows Me is by doing the System Restore thing. That's what the "read me file" said on their web site.
I have JV16 REgistry cleaner. Maybe I'll give it a shot.
Thanks.

It sounds like you created 2 system restore checkpoints...one that you created before the installation, & one that Media 9 program created. If you haven't already done so, try restoring to the point you created, not the one Media 9 created...

That's what I did. I restored to the time I set as a checkpoint about 20 minutes before I installed the player and when that didn't work I restored to the check point that WMP9 set before installation. That didn't remove it either. Then I un-did that restoration and my C drive had no more room to do any further restorations. System restore jammed and wouldn't shut down which caused a few other problems. I had to lower the System Restore lever in "File system properties" to get some room on the hard drive. (it was up to 400MB and I brought it down to 250MB) but, unfortunately, I then lost my original restore point. This just keeps getting better and better :)

Here’s what I did. I removed "Media Player" entries from my registry(Thanks Landon). I downloaded "System Restore Remover".(great little utility. Thanks Ron.) I set a system check point in my System Restore to a time before installation. I had tried to install WMP7 but when I clicked the shortcut, the same error message kept coming up saying: "An internal application error has occured". I used the utility I downloaded (System Restore Remover to replace Windows Media Player 7 with an earlier version. Then I was able to install Windows Media Player 9 on top of it. But it just doesn’t work on my system. It plays CD’s distorted. So I did a System Restore to my checkpoint and this time I was able to get rid of it and it restored Media player6. Problem is I still can’t install Windows Media Player 7. It goes through the installation process but says it was unsucessfull at the end and I still get the error message.
Thanks for all the help everyone. Still open to suggestions as to why I can’t install Media Player 7.

Anyone know why is it so hard to log one here. The Invalid Password page comes up constantly and won't let me log on so I have to create a new user name to log on. (this is the third in 2 days)
