I have a feeling that some of your hardware doesnt like media player, I had a similar problem with a cheap sound card years ago with an earlier version of Media Player.
Check your driver versions.

sounds like you may have a conflict problem, right click on "My Computer" then select - properties - then the Device Manager tab - it will show you if you have any problems - usually by an yellow exclamation mark
