Cameron, use what you have! if you have a full version of windows98 windows 98se or windows me on a standalone (not system recovery disk that come with HP or Compaq) CD you can format and do a full install with the upgrade disk. it will ask you for the older version to be inserted during setup to qualify your for the upgrade. make sure you back up all data (images/music/setup.exes youve downloaded/text/email/anything you have downloaded or created and wish to save) to removable disk before you begin.

Shutmeup..

I haven't installed XP yet but was under the impression that it asks if you want to save things from your previous OS. Have I got it wrong or maybe it means just settings like DUN etc?

You have a choice of upgrading or overlaying if there is already an os on the hard drive. You can also start fresh from a new drive.

well you can't do a full install is what i'm saying for example the best thing to do is totally uninstall me and then run xp and install but with upgrade you can't do that what you will be doing is just overwriting current me files.
If i am incorrect on this please someone let me know but me is kindof unstable i think everyone will agree on that so even if you upgrade what i'm saying is the memory of me still remains.
if this is incorrect or if someone can help fix this please help

The settings for Windows Me will be saved in a compressed archive, but it will be totally nonfunctional unless you uninstall XP. The two operating systems are based on different kernels, so you can be sure that XP is not going to use any of Me's components. At some point of the installation you are offered the opportunity to change the file system from FAT32 to NTFS. Once you do that you can rest assured that you won't have to deal with any Windows Me problems because it won't run under NTFS.

The advantage of upgrading vs formatting and doing a clean install is that all your data should be preserved as it is, but like all things connected with a computer there is never a 100% guarantee. It's always best to back everything up to cdr, but if you don't have a burner you just have to be brave and go through with the upgrade and keep your fingers crossed.

i have a cd r but how can i back up all my data? That would take many cd's unless i could compress it somehow but i don't know how.
Isn't there a way to save to like last system restore or something?

What is the best way to back up all my data? Just incase it is lost?
