I boot up my pc and it halts at MSDOS. i honestly could not understand wawadaves explaination (although i vigourously tried)on how to start windows again. i started up scandisk, it told me i had files PROBABLY just wasting space and i was presented with the option to delete those files or convert them into files. i deleted them (55MB) and my computer just shut down and wouldnt boot windows again. it says ifshlp.sys and vmm32.vxd are both missing or corrupted. can i extract these files from a bootdisk to the system folder as i have the windows ME cd with these files on it or what is the procedure?? i really really need the information stored on my harddrive and reformatting the hd would be a huge loss for me. somebody plz help!!

im sorry but i cant understand this thread. i do not get an a: prompt, it looks like this: -- C> -- then i tried scanreg\restore and all that good stuff.. but it doesnt work!! this is so frustrating. i cant get the bootdisk to work and i cannot get the ME boot cd to work. apparently i am supposed to receive a prompt whether or not to have a cd supported boot, but this is simply not the case. no matter what i type in, all it says is "Type the name of the windows loader (e.g., C:\windows\system\vmm32.vxd)" i put that file on a boot disk and loaded it and then it says "Registry file not found, registry services may be inoperative for this session". i know i can fix this easily by formatting the hard drive, but that is out of the question for me. thanks a lot guys!

The BIOS controls which device is booted.
If you see C:> you are booting to HDD.

Hit Del (usually) and get into BIOS setup. Set the boot order to: floppy, CD-ROM, HDD.
Now you can boot from floppy or your WinME CD-ROM to reinstall overtop.

You may as well re-install overtop because vmm32.vxd cannot be restored ... it is "Constructed" at install time. Overtop will not loose any of your files although some programs/drivers may need reinstall.
