Subject: Windows ME will not start...

Comment: I recently installed a new AMD Motherboard into my old Gateway PII-450, and reinstalled windows after a lot of messing around with settings and reinstalling drivers. I got it to work, but sometimes it would Jam on the windows startup flash screen. My problem now is that it always does this, and NEVER starts up normally. It either Jams at the startup screen or starts successfully in safe mode. I installed all updates and drivers for all, my motherboard, bios and Windows. I am on my cousin's computer right now seeking desperately for a way to rid myself of this horrible thing, and yes I DO want to keep Windows me, because XP didnt quite "agree" with my system. New specs AMD Athlon 1333 384MB SDRAM Voodoo3 2000 Graphics card (when I fix this problem, it will be a GeForce 2 GTS 64mb DDR) IBM 10Gig HD Clean install of Windows Me (sort of)

Reply: (edit)You might check Windows sight for info on the AMD. Any error messages? Good choice on the Geforce.

Reply: (edit)clean install of windows?? SORTA?? when it sticks at the startup screen hit the esc key and see what it says... then boot into safemode and to device manager and remove all your drivers for your sound, modem, mouse, and so forth and see if it'll boot... sounds like it just doesnt like one of ur drivers.

Reply: (edit)What is a sort of clean install of Windows? To do what you wanted to do you need to install the new hardware, get the BIOS settings right, then install Windows on a reformatted hard drive, totally clean. If ME doesn't install the right drivers you should have all the updated drivers from the manufacturers' websites ready and waiting and install them as needed. Then update the chipset patches (see point 10 of the post below). Then visit http://www.computing.net/windowsme/wwwboard/forum/14062.html before you load your programs. When you've finished tuning up, if Windows is working properly (including good startup and shutdown) install your programs one at a time and test between each (remember to reboot between each too so that the registry is OK.) If you need help formatting and reinstalling, Microsoft have an article on the Windows CDs on how to do this and also on their website. On the ME CD you'll find the excellent article in \addons\document\guide and it's called mqsg (believe it or not). The information you want starts about page 31. On the website, go to http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q255/8/67.asp and http://support.microsoft.com/support/windows/topics/winme/setup/setupht.asp http://www.windowsreinstall.com/ is also useful
