Windows ME will not load

Subject: Windows ME will not load
OS: Windows ME
CPU/Ram: Athlon processor/no idea
Comment:
I think I am screwed. When I turn on my computer, windows loads to the point where I can see my desktop wallpaper, but nothing else. No icons, no toolbar at the bottom, nothing. When I try and reboot in safe mode, the same thing happens. Am I doomed to reinstall windows with the recovery cd? I do not have a windows installation disk, only the recovery cd. Any suggestions?

Thank you for any help you can give me.

dannydud,

If Dave's idea doesn't pan out. Give the following a try. Any thing done, just prior to this? {update, hardware install, software install, virus, ect.}

Start the computer, with a boot disk - EBD (emergency boot disk) - startup disk << different names but the same thing.

Select minimal at the menu. Then, at the A:\> prompt type the following.

scanreg /restore
(Press Enter)

Now select a date, prior to the problem and press Enter. When and if it says you've restored a good registry. Remove the startup disk, and press the Ctrl+Alt+Del keys at the same time, to restart the computer.

See if it starts normally. If it doesn't, try the same thing, but select another date just prior to the one you selected.

If a boot disk is needed. One can be found here

There are other ways, but give that shot/chance first.

Good Luck,
CrazyOne

When I open the task manager, there is only 1 entry. isafe, which is anti-virus software. There is no explorer, no systray, no sysmgr, nothing. It is like everything just vanished. I have tried ending this isafe task, and it doesn't change anything that is happening.

Hi Danny,
Were you able to fix the problem with your computer? I am also having a similar problem and have not been able to resolve it. I would really appreciate any help on this.
Thanks,
Eric

I could fix the same problem with the windows ME CD. I booted the system with the dos prompt and cd support then i changed to the windows folder on the cd and typed d:\scanreg /restore so i got some restore points and could go back to a former state of the system. This solved my problem, cause after a restart of the system the desktope apeared again.
Thanx to crazy one!
immo

The SAME thing is happening to me! The recovery disk doesn't seem to be working for me and I dont think I have a boot disk. I don't want to take it to get fixed cause I don't have the money.

Did anything the say help?

Thanks.

Hi,

I am having the same problem, I wonder if it is an epidemic. If I install the recovery disk, wouldn't that delete all my files, which I do not want to lose since I did not save them on a floppy disk.

Any input, is appreciated.

Thanks,
Foxsolo
