1.) Back-up data
2.) Format Drive
3.) Install 98SE
4.) Post another query on how to do all the above.

For crying out aloud!

ME is 98SE with a few tweaks and cosmetic changes. Both ran fine for me, I just preferred ME's updated driver database.

What issues are you having?

it's got a better driver database than win2k
or the Xtra Pretty operating system.

I need all the commands that I have to preform in dos. And what things do I need to back up? Which files and how do I do that?

My problem that I have been having are the following:

Computer is always crashing to a blue or black screen when I am on the internet and only when I am on the internet. It is also restarting my comp and locking up the keyboard. It is not a program problem as I went to msconfig and took out all of the start up programs so that nothing was running but the net still crashes. My computer is not overheating as I have a bigger sized fan. Also I have explorer 6.0 and all of the upgrade for windows I think. But windows ME is still crashing. So I am not sure what the problem is that is why I am going back to 98. I am open to any other suggestions if you have any.

For your 1st point, refer to the following post on the main board (above you & just below):

Tommy - index.dat

Dave - winxp vs dos

As for the rest, i'm sure one of the helpful people above will be able to decipher & interprit the rest of what you said!

Sounds like you should first get rid of IE6.0 and go back to 5.5 and try that for a while. If your still getting crashes then move on, but do one thing at a time and document it. And let us know if it works, good luck.

I went to IE 6.0 because 5.5 was doing that same thing to me. So I thought that maybe I need a whole different explorer so I downloaded Netscape 6.1 but the comp is still crashing!! Why?? Any help?

Considering the symptons you've described you've yet to send any information regarding
Processor speed,memory?
other software installed and additional Hardware peripherals you might have on this Sh*t box
please allow us to better help you if you
enclose that information as well
it might be you're trying to run ME on a 486 with 8mb of ram

JUST bite the bullet & DO response 2 !! Go to Howtos at top of this page or use the search box. Or google or any number of other reference pointers that are mentioned in this forum! When you run into difficulty (as i'm sure you will, lol), come back & we will sort it out from there.

Good luck.

If you need that much help on DOS, formatting, installing, you are better off to leave well alone and take your PC to your local techie who will know what to do!

Sounds a lot like the problem I had. It was overheating even though I thought I had enough cooling. Try running the PC with the side covers off and well away from any other source of heat. Also allow plenty of air around the unit. If that all works you get an even bigger fan.
