Windows ME Startup

Hi,

I upgraded from 98 to ME, and it went perfectly. Then, about 8 weeks later, it started to stick on startup (after the Windows background had loaded, but before anything else had a chance to load). I also started to get a lot of blue screens on startup. So, I reformatted, and reinstalled, and then upgraded to ME again. Everything worked fine for approximately 8 weeks. Then the same thing. I saw somewhere in this forum that turning off System Restore might be the ticket. So, I have now reformatted, upgraded, and started over, but this time I have deactivated System Restore.

My question: Is there anything else worth trying at this point, or should I just wait about 8 weeks and see?

Thanks!

Bad news,I have a 5 week old HP,and I`ve been having major problems with start up and worse with shut down freezing. From all i`ve been able to find out,and HELP is very informative too,is that we have to wait for patches to be made for programs we run or access,as many programs/drivers are not yet compatable.I wish you luck,i`ve even looked into the "system" a little and am stumped..

Have you tried a clean install without going through the upgrade from 98?

I would love to, but I am not really sure how tó pull that off. Let me explain.

I am one of those silly people that bought a Compaq Presario 7460 which comes with a pair of Quick Restore CDs which include all the programs preinstalled on the computer, including Windows 98. In other words, there is no way to separate out just Windows, but this would be necessary, as I understand it, for a clean install, since I would need to put in the Windows 98 CD at some point to prove that I have the right to use the upgrade.

Any suggestions?

Arthur

1st suggestion; don't buy conpaq.
2nd sugg. go to start settings CP add/remove programs. take out anything that you don't need. next, got to start run type in msconfig click the start up tab and take out all the crap. Bare basics you only need 2 things in there with checks in it, sys tray and ms explorer. I usually leave some other stuff in there, but no more than 6-7 things. Norton and cd creator are major players in the startup problem gambit.
