Specs:
MBoard: ECS K7VA (VIA KT133 Chipset)
Processor: Athlon TBird 850 MHz
Memory: 128MB Micron
3D Card: Diamond Stealth III S540 32MB
Hard Drive: Maxtor DiamondMax, 15GB
Also: Modem, AC97 Compatable Sound, CD-ROM, Floppy

Problem:
I have tried installing Windows ME twice on this system, clean install with newly formated drive. However, after installation is completed I get one of the exclamation point errors in the device manager stating that the secondary IDE controller is not available or not working properly. This continues even if I install Via's latest 4in1 driver from their website.

I installed Win98SE and Win2k on it previously without this error popping up, but this person wants Windows ME installed on their system. I can't think of what else to do? Any solutions?

I had this problem to when I installed windows for my first time. It's just the IDE-drivers that you need to install. If you have a cd from your motherboard, browse it for a folder that is called IDE or something.

If you can't find it, you can take a look on www.windrivers.com or www.driverzone.com

The only time I had this problem was from using a pirated version of WinME. When I got the full Version, not an upgrade. WinMe install great without any problems. Are you using a Full version? Oh, just a note when you find the IDE driver from the CD-ROM, You will be able to install unless of course your CD-ROM is on IDE2, then you will not see the CD-ROM. Plus it will disappear once in a while and having to reboot after you install the IDE driver, or what ever is hooked onto IDE2. Just a word for thought.
good luck

My cd-rom was secondary master and was correctly detected, but it was using ms-dos compatible modus, so it couldn't understand long filenames.

When I had the problem, I used a full version-cd of win98, later I had the same problem with winME, so I don't think it has something to do with pirated software or not.

By the way, ide-drivers are not for a cd-rom, they're just to manage the 2 ide-ports. You can have the same problem with a second harddisk

Had this problem on one particular system. Installation would quit when almost completed and final re-boot. after many unsucessful attempts, finally made a set of installation diskettes...problem solved.
