Windows ME right click lost

Somehow I lost the capability to right click on the desktop and have a menu box appear. The right click function of the mouse works in just about every other program, but not at all on the non-icon area of the desktop. Also, if I right click on one of the icons, it is highlighted, but no menu opens.
