Here's my problem. When i start the computer the desktop background comes on, but no icons or taskbar is there. A error message comes up stating a required .dll file C:\windows\system\shlwapi.dll was not found. The cursor moves but when i use the taskmanager it shows Norton running. I can shut it down, but it makes no difference. Any ideas guys? Thanks.

Your title says "Windows Me Problems", but you list your OS as Windows Xp Pro. It makes a difference, please clarify.

Meanwhile, run that file "in quote marks"
through google--there's plenty to read.

IF you are on Windows ME -- and it's important that you are for the following. Then boot with your ME startup disk, get a full one here if you don't and boot with it, get to an A:\> prompt and type:

ext

and press Enter. Let it do it's routine and when it says "please enter the path to the windows cab files" type:

c:\windows\options\install

Failing that:

c:\windows\options\cabs

Now it asks "please enter the name of the file(s) you want to "extract", put:

shlwapi.dll

Now it says "Please enter the path to extract to ("Enter" for current directory) put:

c:\windows\system

Now you get confirmation of task.

Source Path: c:\windows\options\install
Files to extract: shlwapi.dll
Destination Path: c:\windows\system
Is this Ok (y/n)

Click yes and let it extract the file. When it arrives back at the A:\> prompt, having completed, take the disk out and reboot.

I got some people say it's this way ...

Viking OR seasedasease, I searched for quite a while and finally found the "shlwapi.dll" file on my Windows ME. It is located at: C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\INSTALL\WIN_14 if that would be of help to you.

Got it covered thanks buddymcw.

"c:\windows\options\install

Failing that:

c:\windows\options\cabs"

No need to specify the cab file in DOS extraction, cuts through the SFP (system file protection). And it runs through every cab file till it finds what it's looking for.

You could just put WIN_14.cab where it says "restore from", but it's not neccessary.

And If you actually tried putting C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\INSTALL\WIN_14 in the "extract file" tool in Windows msconfig, it more than likely wouldn't accept it. It's programmed to accept c:\windows\options\install or c:\windows\options\cabs, or occasionally it might let you specify just the cab file number.
