Comment: Hi! I was just wondering, what OS should I install? Windows ME or Windows NT? What's so good about each! i'm confused on what to install. I like Windows NT and am fed up with Windows ME. But, I'm not too sure what to do since it is a old OEM. Please help me (By the way, my comp is a PIII 800mHz, 30 GB) Thx

Reply: (edit)What about Unix? or free BSD? or even Linux? It all depends on what you want your computer for. If you want to play games go with Me. If you want networking workhorse go with NT. If you want both, go with ME.

Reply: (edit)I did a clean install on my dell, and must admit after months of complaining about ME, it does seem to running much better now. course there is still the snooping issue which MS has built into it, which apalls me, but I really don't have a reason to be worried, it is just the thought of logging everything I do. One day when I am rich I will buy the hig dollar "Evidence Eliminator" app. I don't think you will get the gaming capabilities out of 2000 that you can with ME. After a few days of tweaking and updating, ME is running great with only 128 MB of RAM. A lot of that is due to a cache manager "Cacheman" (free) I downloaded at www.outertech.com. And the fact that I didn't load all the dell crap back on here.

Reply: (edit)I dont think windows ME should even come into consideration when deciding on a new O/S. If you want high network functionality (ie you plan to use your computer as a router, etc.) install Linux or Windows Wndows 2000 server. If you want simplicity, ease of use, and something easy to fix, install Windows 98. If you want to be flashy install Windows XP. Windows XP supports all windows 9x applications and gaming abilities, and has the network functionality of windows NT, however it is slower and takes more space. It also has a few bugs that the others don't. whatever you do - save yourself a lot of hassle and stay away from winMe. Its win98 with loads of useless patches. Windows 2000 has gaming abilities. contrary to popular belief it is as fast as, and in some cases faster than win9x. The only issue is that many games are not designed to run on windows 2000, but this is not a shortcoming of the operating system. In conclusion, I would say that it is a choice between windows98 and Windows XP. If you have lots of RAM (128+, ideally 256)install Windows Xp, if not then Windows 98. In the absence of either, then use whatever isnt windows ME. CP/M comes to mind.

Reply: (edit)Windows 95 is windows 3.1 with loads of useless patches. Windows 98 is windows 95 with loads of useless patches. Windows ME is windows 98 with loads of useless patches. Im detecting a pattern here :). My ME box is stable.
