Windows ME Networking Problems

I tried connecting to a LAN last night with a few friends and I couldnt connect. By connecting i mean that i couldnt see them and they couldnt see me. I was wondering if upgrading to XP would solve the problem since i heard that Windows ME isnt very network friendly. Please help
