I recently installed windows ME and its been a nightmare ever since pc keeps on crashing, its slowed down by at least 50%, but the most annoying problem is after I log of from the net and close IE 5.5 a kernel 32.dll error appears and the box just WONT SHUT. it wont let me shut down properly and end up having to restart the pc every time..
I have run Norton Utilities Integrator with no help what so ever
CAN ANYONE HELP PLEASEEEEEEE

Why in the world did you install that mess in the first place.

Throw Win98 back on and enjoy what's left of summer.

That happened to me.
Try pressing Ctr-Alt-Del and closing the applications that are running one at a time.

If it hasn't corrected by the time they are all closed, press the Ctr-Alt-Del keys again.

If it still doesn't shut down switch it off manually.

Another glitch I experienced in Me
was loading software, whn the Install Wizard was so slow it almost gave up.

Millennium seems to provide mixed fortunes for users. There are probably things that can be done in BIOS Setup etc but I reverted back to Win 98 after a couple of weeks because Me was much slower on the Net and very inconsistent. If you preserved the 'uninstall' feature when you loaded it you may wish to do the same. Otherwise, it may mean biting the bullet, removing Me manually and reinstalling 98.

Commiserations and I hope it all works out.

Hi Webster, thanks for your reply, I have done just that, I was forced to close down programs as an error appeared as I was running out of memory. But I honestly believe that the error occurs in IE 5, the problems somehow are not so bad when IE is not open,I have tried to re-install win 98 but unfortunately it wouldn't accept it as the message says " I have a newer version of windows..." nevertheless I am taking your advice and switching back to win 98, lets hope Billy gets it right next time....
Thanks a million
Dolly

Try re-installing ME over the top, it worked for me but it took ages to re-install. Make sure you save your old system settings though.

Good luck!

Thanks Mark for your messages, but it looks like I have encountered another problem with ME. I unistalled ME, but now it looks like I might be running both ME and WIN 98...
so I tried to install WIN 98 again but would not accept it as it tells me I am still running an update version of 98..
I am so confused this is a total nightmare, I have now tried to install ME once again and it freezes half way through and refuses to continue, any suggestions Mark?? or anyone pleaseeeeeee,

I have just read the messages about KERNAL32.dll errors, and i have had the same, where it comes up with kernal32.dll error and you cant close the window, so do you think its explorer causing the problem, i only baught win ME cos it got such good reviews everywhere, i guess every OS has bugs in it, there is nothing you can do about it but keep patching and updating it.

I also have the message. Someone told me it was the canon bubble jet driver was not up-to-date, but their download seems to be faulty. If you look, most of these computers have software that is not really Me compatible. argggh too.

Same problem here but only when I access certain sights in IE 5.5 but always the same sights.Other than that it runs without a problem. Thinking about replacing kernell32.dll. Check the following;http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q146/4/19.asp

Dolly,
just back up your drivers. Then reformat. Install windows me as your operating system. You will be happy that you did.

It was happening on my old computer for 2 years until it made it so unstable my hard drive crashed. URGGGGGHHHHHHH. How frustrating. Where to go from here?

I felt so alone in my Kernel32.dll errors until now!! I had this problem on my previous computer which ran Win98 and it also finally crashed due to instability. I blamed it on my slow phone connection here as the errors always seemed to come when I was running explorer or outlook. SO I bought a brand new computer with Me preinstalled and got an external modem for more stability supposedly. It is better now but guess what-- still get the Kernel32.dll total freezeup on the new machine occasionally... what is the deal here and what causes this????

To reinstall win98, delete Win ME and boot with a Win 98 disk, then install again.

It's the bug of IE5.5 in Windows ME. After upgraded to IE5.5 SP2, it will be much better.
But, DO NOT upgrade to IE6.0, it will make Windows ME crash very frequently, according to my own experience.
